I don't know anything about the car business. I do know a bit about the food business. The food business is very hard on people. It's a good short term job but a very bad career unless you want to eventually own your own place or you get the training to becme a renowned chef. Even then it's hard on you.
As I'm sure you've seen you bust your butt. You work every holiday, night, weekend, etc. You usually get little to no medical or retirement coverage. After working really hard and putting yourself out there for the owner they decide you are easily replaced. Eventually you work your way up to management. When you are in management you are salaried. You then work so many hours that your salary is meaningless. In fact if you broke it down by hour the servers are making quite a bit more money per hour then you are. I have never seen it to be any different.
Mr OC was in the restaurant business for alot of years. He had ulcers, back problems, chest pains, high bp and he was only in his 20's. He went to school and got trained in hvac/r. By the time he finished a short training he was making $10. more an hour. He might be on call but he was no longer working every holiday or night or weekend. We didn't have a family yet at that time but if we did he would never have seen our children. He would have been sleeping while the kids were leaving for school and at work til well after they went to bed and every weekend when they were playing baseball, soccer, etc.
So my recommendation to young people in the restaurant business is always find another career path if possible.
