Wasn't there a big stink about that because she gave them the cars, but didn't tell them about and didn't cover the cost of taxes and tags? I remember a couple people on the news saying they were peeved because they couldn't afford it and it wasn't a gift after all.
oh wow - poor them. pay teh taxes, get the tags, sell the car, make out like a bandit. Hmmmm. Some peeps are dumb
How do you pay for something if you don't have the money?

To each his own. Some people, for whatever legitimate and sincere reason, are inspired to do good by Oprah. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. And others, for whatever genuine and justifiable reason, thing JB's music is trash. And we here might disagree, but nothing wrong with that.

... Oprah bashing, Starbucks bashing, etc. is more 'trendy' than the simple appreciation of either of them. She may not appeal to everybody's taste, but I, for one, appreciate her intentions. She wants to do good... if she makes bazillions of dollars while doing it, good for her... she's a brilliant, talented entrepreneurial mind and she's living the American dream that most people dream of! Bashers just seem jealous and bitter, IMHO.
She's a brilliant self-promoter. When everyone in her audience got cars last year (or 2 years ago, whenever it was), all the headlines the next day said Oprah gave 275 people brand new cars. Oprah didn't give anybody anything, the cars were donated by GM.
The only reason she's living the American dream is because there are so many gullible people out there who would follow her over the cliff like a pack of lemmings.
actually both of you are right. I really don't have anything against her and she seems like a cool person. I'll agree that her business sense (or skill of choosing those with good business sense) has made a tremendous world of difference for her. I just like to tease.
My ex-gf's mom looked a lot like Oprah, if she were white.
her mom? your ex? or Oprah?

get neither - listen to the radio as it was meant to be, free.
Clear Channel has such a stranglehold on commercial radio that if you actually want to listen to a station that plays music you want to hear you may soon find there's no other alternative than satellite. There's other alternates in the works such as Hi-Def radio that will use existing FM frequencies but that could be a ways off. I may be paying for satellite radio but I also have no problem saying it's worth every penny of it to be able to hear the music
I want to hear.

Well, I know that. But some people aren't quite as creative and unscrupulous as you or I am
It was a nice gesture, but still unfortunate for those who couldn't take advantage of it,

As I recall... Oprah wanteed to pay the taxes... but they winners would still have to pay taxes on the $$...as it was considered a gift... it was a no win issue!

I wouldn't blame it on the IRS. If Saint Oprah wanted to do something "good" she should have known what the consequences were. You can't convince me that Saint Oprah, or someone on her staff, didn't know you can't give people new cars without tax liability to the recipient. All this turned out to be was good publicity for Saint Oprah, who didn't really
DO anything, at the expense of others.

Wow Larry, a bit crusty on this, I see.
I'm not an Oprah regular (if I watch her show twice a year that's a lot), but I do have a lot of respect for her, what she's accomplished and what she does. Yes, she's in it for business (just like JB) her entertainment vehicle is just different and her fan base may not include all of us. She's way beyond Jerry Springer...making that comparison is akin to saying Jimmy's like Milli Vanilli.
I'm not sure where all the negativity comes from (jealousy??)...seems like some routinely struggle with others' success...especially if the successful ones are women.

I don't know all the details... but I too find it hard to imagine that her staff didnt know or at least look into this glitch BEFORE the event happened....

I was just pointing out that the IRS had its hand out... and no matter what Oprah's intent was... it was tarnished by the winners having to pay a price...

I'm not jealous of Oprah and it has nothing to do with the fact she's a woman. It has everything to do with the fact that, in my opinion, her fame (huge) is way out of proportion to her contribution to society (miniscule). Hosting a trashy tabloid TV show isn't much of an accomplishment, a lot of people have done it. Oprah just happened to hit on the "touchy-feely" nerve before Dr. Phil did.
