The Chili Peppers at Woodstock does not count

Ask him when the Chili Peppers have ever played to that sized crowd, when THEY were the only head-liner.

Then ask him how long it took them to sell the show out.
Remember, Jimmy has been known to sell out 2 shows at a venue that holds 40,000 in a matter of less than 15 minutes.

Over 50,000, can't find anywhere that narrows it down more than that but everything I've found has 50K or a higher listing. Wasn't there a rumor about this time last year that they were under new ownership and going to start doing shows like Buffett again? Or was that just somebody's wish list that I read?!

There was a rumour. But, I also heard a rumour of Jones Beach in June this morning too. Not sure I'd believe either.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers? 70,000 as an only act? I seriously doubt this ever happened.

Suffice it to say that Jimmy has had a decades-long, highly successful touring career. Tell your friend that he wins only if the Chili Peppers are STILL selling out venues ten years from now...or twenty, even.

How about just getting some new friends with a better taste in music?

When the Red Hot Chili Peppers sell out every show in every city they play and are invited to headline Jazzfest and play to sold out baseball stadiums, tell him to give me a call. My guess is hell would've frozen over by then.

Okay. I got into this thing after the fact. The original argument was between him and another friend who says JB can pull that big of a crowd. I called and found out that the Chili Peppers played that big of a crowd overseas, at some castle if that helps. But, this is a big difference. Metal and hard rock are much bigger overseas than they are here. I have a video of Iron Maiden from 2000 playing in front of 200,000 overseas. I guess that RHCP haven't played to that much people here. That makes his a poor argument.

70,000 to see Chili Peppers? As far as Jimmy selling that, I have no doubt he could. As we all know tickets go so fast when on sale. When chicago and alpine go on sale together, both sold out in about 15 minutes. thats probably over 50,000 right there. Sure there are some doubles, but i think he could do it. But I wouldnt want to sit in the midst of 70,000 people, even for Jimmy.
Hell the scalpers would buy the first 40,000 anyway!

Those bigger shows overseas, how much were tickets? Did they even charge for them?

Jimmy could easily sell out any of the bigger football stadiums, which would be 80-100k easily, if they sold field (floor) seats. The sound quality would be horrendous, though, and I don't think Jimmy would do it, just on principle...

70,00 is an NFL, or big Division 1A college stadium. The Chili Peppers have not sold out anything like that in the states. If I remember correctly, the Chili Perppers last tour sold relatively slowly, and they were playing your standard 25k to 40k basketball arenas the same type of venues that Jimmy plays when he goes indoors.
Also, these are the same venues that Paul McCartney, the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, U2, and many more play. As someone who used to work in a major booking agency, I can tell you, Jimmy Buffet is revered as a god when it comes to his track record of selling out shows consistently. Nobody, and I do mean nobody, continues to sell out 20k+ seat venues year after year after year. Big reunion/farewell tours do that type of business, but they typically last only one year (Cher and Kiss don't count). Jimmy Buffett has been one of the top ten draws every year for about a decade. Nobody else has done that.
I don't mean to sound like I'm ranting, but I can tell you from personal experience that there is nobody else in the USA that sells tickets like Jimmy Buffett.

I was trying to be accurate. He took a year or two off somewhere within the last 15 years, and I didn't feel like looking it up, but overall it has been more than a decade. Although he didn't start regularly turning up on that top ten list until the late '80s or early '90s.

Your friend is a dope. The Chili Peppers played at Slane Castle in 2003 with Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and PJ Harvey. American rock festivals are huge overseas and while RHCP were obviously the headliners of this particular one, fans came to see the other bands too. What this has to do with Buffett's popularity in the US, I have no idea. Bottom line is point out to your friend the # of shows in multiple cities and stadiums of all shapes and sizes that JB sells out within minutes year after year with no supporting act. End of discussion.

The Chili Peppers did play to 50,000 people here in Vegas this year....but it was a free concert for the city's 100th anniversary and Weezer actually opened up as well.
