When Tim McCarver used to do the Mets' games, he was talking about Bob Gibson during a game. He said when he was the Cardinals' catcher he went out to the mound to talk to Gibson. Gibson told him "Get back behind the plate. The only thing you know about pitching is that it's hard to hit."chippewa wrote:Today's the 38th anniversary of Mickey Lolich outdueling Bob Gibson in the 7th game of the '68 series, Lolich's third win in the series. Can you imagine one of today's managers going out to the mound to take the ball from one of those pitchers, just because they allowed a lead-off single in the 8th? They'd get the ball alright, they'd just need a proctologist to remove it.

No, it is the Tony Larussa-ization of baseball. And Dusty is the worst example of it. Everybody thinks that is what you have to do. Count pitches, situational switches beginning in the sixth inning. Closers getting ONLY the bottom of the ninth. It not only has over analized a fairly simple game. It was turned pitchers into PUSSY's.Wino you know wrote:He probably never would've been in the game in the 8th inning.
NOBODY pitches a complete game anymore-they're all five-six inning pitchers.
This year the Cubs had exactly TWO pitchers pitch a complete game.
(Of course, they ARE the Cubs).
For godsakes, Sutter, Gossage, Smith etc. would pitch at least the 8th & 9th for a save and sometimes more than that
and it kills me to say this. I lived 1969 (and died)
go Mets
OK, I'll say it quietly

It was nothing for Rolline Fingers to come into the game in the SEVENTH inning. Especially in a playoff game.[/quote]For godsakes, Sutter, Gossage, Smith etc. would pitch at least the 8th & 9th for a save and sometimes more than that![]()

And I'm sorry-I have to go with the Cardinals & Atletics in the World Series. (Unless it's the Yankees, I ALWAYS go for the NON-east coast teams).
And since I'm "cheering" for them, you can bet your next 327 paychecks that the world series will feature the Tigers & Mets.

The 2006 Major league leader was Aaron Harrang (there's a name that leaves batters quivering) with freakin' 6
What the h@ll ever happened to a pitcher doing his job, Tony. One year after you were annointed "Genious" by guiding the '85 White Sox to 85 wins. Fernando Valenzula (sp) became the last freaking pitcher to record 20 complete games.
Warren Spahn.....382 Complete games, including 17 straight years of 15 or more.
Bob Gibson.....255 Complete games, including back to back 27's in '68/69
Fergie Jenkins......267 CG, with 30 in '71 and 29 in '74

And yeah, I THINK I want the Athletics to win the A.L. series, but, once the Yankees are eliminated, it's REALLY hard to cheer against someone like Leyland after the way he boxed B-hole's ears in when they were both with the Pirates. Leyland should've been knighted for that.

Leyland should have been the Pad's skipper by now.
He was campaigning for the job 2 years ago.
Then, last season, the team goes on a tear in May and a loud chorus gets Bochy a two-year extension from new-prez Sandy Alderson.
We'd played just .500 ball all the way up to this late August, and I really don't think the late push is gonna save ol' "double-switch" Bochy this time.
He's not management's guy, and his "good ol' boy" act has wore thin.
Young players love him, but most vets get real tired of a completely juggled line-up each day.
Bet he ends up in San Francisco... but, maybe Chitown?
