Mets get a huge break. Tonight's game is rained out, so Glavine can pitch on full rest. The game is going to be made up tomorrow and there will be no off-day for travel.

How far-fetched would this be....

Bochy, given "permission" to do so, leaves SD to manage OAK
Macha, fired from OAK, gets hired in SD

Billy Beane is known to admire Bochy
Sandy Alderson knows Macha from OAK days

hmmmmm

Interesting listening to Bay Area Sports radiom talking about Billy Ball, managers, etc. Macha shoud be furious the way this was handeled. How would you like to be Macha looking for a job as a manager and the press confrence report was YOU don't get along with the players? BUT HE WON!!

If Buck Showalter could get hired by 3 different teams, I don't think Macha will have any problems getting another job.

Cubbie Bear wrote:Both Chicago papers & WGN-radio are all reporting a probable Tuesday press conference to announce Lou Piniella as the 48th manager of the Chicago Cubs.

WGN-reports that he was given a guarantee of increased payroll to $115M, or about $20M over last year and a four year deal. The later is interesting since hendry has only a two year deal. WGN is owned by the Tribune Company, which owns the Cubs so they should have pretty good sources
And now that we know it is true, I am officially ecstatic!

Guessing, Bob Brenly. Although I hear Piniella is lobbying pretty hard. Been there for broadcasts and twice on his own.
Close, so close :-?

You should be! Lou has a much better track record with keeping pitchers healthy than Dusty did. Maybe Prior and Wood will actually pitch this year?

Was Larrry Rothchild the Cubs pitching coach this season? If so he was with Lou in Tampa Bay.

Lou Piniella is pretty much the reason I like baseball. I never watched baseball as a kid other than a couple Cubs innings here or there because games were always on WGN during the day in the summertime. But I do distinctly remember Lou managing the Reds. That WS Reds team was fun and I remember Lou being feisty and entertaining. He worked in a similar way as Bob Knight, who I still adored at that time. Then Piniella went to the M's. I spent most of the '98 summer in the state of Washington and watched lots of M's games... I paid attention to Lou. I liked his style and his team with A-Rod, Jr & Randy Johnson was fun to watch. Then his 2001 team came very, very close to going to the WS. Lou kind of became my coaching inspiration while I was coaching basketball. So having him coach my Cubbies is kind of a dream come true! Will he win a WS with the Cubs? Probably not. But I'm so excited to have him here and optimistic that he will produce winning teams that right now, I don't even care to think about a WS... again, for now at least...
