I like it. Pena is cheap. We have excess pitching and no outfield depth. He murders lefties. He's 24 with insane potential. And he has a good arm. I think this deal works ou nicely.NYCPORT wrote:HEHEHEHE. Good move Theo.parrothead338 wrote:Sox trade Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena.

This is, quite possibly, one of the cutest pictures EVER!!!

Oh!
Manager Sadaharu Oh of Team Japan is thrown up into the air by team after defeating Team Cuba in the final game of the World Baseball Classic at Petco Park on March 20, 2006 in San Diego, California.

So... if Alphonso Soriano refuses to play left field and the Nationals are forced to trade him... what teams are most likely to land him?
Will Hendry pull the trigger and try to make a deal?
Even more intriguing with this from the Washington Post:
Cubs Eager for Matos
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Orioles remain in contact with the Chicago Cubs, who are pushing for a swap of outfielder Luis Matos for Chicago infielder Todd Walker, according to a baseball source. The source said the Cubs are more eager for such a trade, but the Orioles haven't dismissed it. If they agree to the deal, the Orioles likely will use Walker, who batted .305 with 12 home runs last season, as a designated hitter. . . .

When I was station in Japan in the 1970's, I saw Sadaharu Oh play for the Yomimuri City Giants of Japan's Central Baseball League. (Same team Joe Pepitone played for in 1973).
I got to meet Oh briefly once, and got a very pleasant "Konichi-Wa" from him.

Pena, if were to play full-time, could hit over 40 HRs with Fenway as his home park.kitty wrote:let's hope so!!parrothead338 wrote:I like it. Pena is cheap. If he refuses to play left field they should suspend him without pay until he realizes the manager runs the team, not the players.iuparrothead wrote:So... if Alphonso Soriano refuses to play left field and the Nationals are forced to trade him... what teams are most likely to land him?

I like the trade......Pena has a lot of up side.....Arroyo seems to be more intrested in his music career...it seems that since he released a cd and played a concert the night before he had to pitch shows were his priorities are.......also it reflects in is w-l and era..........he was going to the bullpen........for a starting pitcher i think that is going a little backwards in your career!!!.......They took a chance on Ortiz when he was with the Twins.........as i said a lot of upside to this Trade!!.......The Sox have a lot of depth in starting pitching with a 3 great arms in the minors!!kitty wrote:let's hope so!!parrothead338 wrote:I like it. Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

“Somewhere over the rainbow……” I agree, but very few owners and managers have the stones to do that. Ever watch the HBO series, “When it Was a Game?” How far the greatest game has fallen.LIPH wrote:If he refuses to play left field they should suspend him without pay until he realizes the manager runs the team, not the players.iuparrothead wrote:So... if Alphonso Soriano refuses to play left field and the Nationals are forced to trade him... what teams are most likely to land him?

ok... i just checked this to make sure...
one of my former high school students is a starting pitcher for the diamondbacks... brad halsey. he was with the yankees and then was traded in the randy johnson trade to the dbacks. he is still listed on the roster as a starting pitcher....
its good to see one of your kids make it to the big time... so ill be rooting for them, especially when he pitches

Ok time to chime in. I spent the weekend watching 3 truely entertaining games at Petco Park for the WBC semi's and finals. Here is what I learned...
1. You don't need MLB players to compete...only 2 were in the finals (Suzuki of Seattle and Oatsuka of Texas).
2. Cubans have more fun at baseball games than anyone should be allowed. Constant music and dance...cowbells, horns, drums and various musical noise makers. When Cuba came to bat...It got louder.
3. Japanese baseball fans are a slight step above the British in letting loose.
4. Korean fans are very pasionate and knowledgable.
5. Flag waving is fun to watch.
Overall it was one of the best and most enjoyable sports experiences I have attended. It was great to see the bunt utilized like it was intended. It was great to see teams move baserunners along. It was great to see hitters hitting behind the runner. It was great to see fundimentals of the game being practiced and exacuted. It was great to see baseball being played at a high level and doing so for fun. (or in Korea's case, to also be non-draftable...military wise). Maybe the reason only one of those teams loaded with MLB players made it to the semi-finals (And they were the first eliminated) is because they lost track of those fundimentals. Rather than hitting behind a runner, they tried to hit it over the fence. Maybe if they built a "team" with a leadoff hitter, a contact hitter and a few power hitters...some would have advanced. Rather than 9 guys all tring to knock the cover off the ball. So now the USA, Dominican Republic (USA-2), Puerto Rico (USA-3), Canada, Mexico, Panama and the others can look back and either give some lame excuse or....buck up and realize what actually beat them was the game itself.

It's more than that. If he doesn't play by Thursday, they will place him on the "Disqualified List". Not only does he not get paid, he does not get service time against his contract, meaning they retain his rights forever (or until he lives up to his contract, which says he will play BASEBALL, not SECOND BASE). He can't go free agent.jonesbeach10 wrote:I agree.LIPH wrote:If he refuses to play left field they should suspend him without pay until he realizes the manager runs the team, not the players.iuparrothead wrote:So... if Alphonso Soriano refuses to play left field and the Nationals are forced to trade him... what teams are most likely to land him?
