AMEN BROTHER!!! Funny thing in SF, not one can remember, or even cares, what the damn place is called any more.

Ask anyone out there if they've ever heard of Candlestick Park, Kezar Stadium, or Seals Stadium.

As a kid I damn near froze to death in August at the Stick. Giants played the Braves. Aaron was out of the line up but hit in the 9th.... and stuck out.

BTW- back in the days of $.50 malts and Cracker Jacks!!

First hockey game I saw the Seals. Wow, we're old...

I'm OK with the corporate names on the parks under one condition...

You name it "Miller Park", it STAYS "Miller Park".
You name it "GoDaddy.Com Park", it STAYS "GoDaddy.Com" Park.

Corporate names have been on ballparks forever....(Ever hear of Wrigley Field?), but don't keep changing it. The original name should stay forever.

Except in the cases like what happened in to Houston a couple of years ago.

Does Enron Park ring a bell??? Minute Maid sounds better anyway.

Also heard that President Bush will throw out the first pitch at Great American Ballpark in Cincy on April 3rd.

Astro Stadium sounds even better.

That's great.
Also-Great American Ballpark MAY be a corporate name, but it sounds WAY better than "Cinergy Field." Of course, I'LL always call it Riverfront Stadium.

I remember the days of .50 cent malts & cracker jacks.
I also remember when I was going to work for $1.40 an hour.

Yeah, we ARE old.

You're SO right, Captain. But, really, doesn't "Wrigley Field" sound better than "U.S. Cellular Field?"

Lets see...bubble gum or cell phones....one traditional item of baseball and the latter a new item of baseball...ask any GM in late July. But by keeping the names the same forever....wasn't the Cubs called the White Stockings prior to 1900? Look it up.  :D

Wino...

I have 56 bleacher ticket stubs from 1969 and 70. I would mow a lawn for $3. It was 45 cents each way on the "El" and 50 cents to get in the bleachers of Wrigley. With the remaining money, I could pretty much eat my fill. My favorite choice was a half pound of fries and a chocolate shake from Henry's on Clark Street.

That was 6th and 7th grade, and I went to most of those games by myself. Could you imagine letting a kid do that today?

Does it bother you that Dusty wears sweat bands on his arm to manage? :o

I'm talking about the Stadium names, not the team names.

But the Cubs have been the Cubs since 1902. Previous to that they were the Orphans, the Colts, and yes, the White Stockings.

On the same note, the White Sox were previously called the White Stockings as well.

Others:
Yankees: New York Highlanders, Baltimore Orioles (yes, they moved from Baltimore!)
Twins: Washington Senators
Rangers: Washington Senators
Reds: Cincinnati Red Stockings, Cincinnati Redlegs
Red Sox: Boston Pilgrims, Boston Somersets
Pirates: Pittsburgh Alleghenys
Phillies: Philadelphia Blue Jays, Philadelphia Quakers
Orioles: St. Louis Browns, Milwaukee Brewers
Nationals: Montreal Expos
Indians: Cleveland Naps, Cleveland Blues
Giants: NY Giants
Dodgers: Brooklyn Dodgers, Brooklyn Robins, Brooklyn Trollydodgers, Brooklyn Superbas, Brooklyn Bridegrooms
Cardinals: St. Louis Perfectos, St. Louis Browns
Brewers: Seattle Pilots
Braves: Milwaukee Braves, Boston Braves, Boston Doves, Boston Rustlers, Boston Bees, Boston Beaneaters, Boston Red Caps
Athletics: Kansas City Athletics, Philadelphia Athletics
Astros: Houston Colt .45's
Angels: Anaheim Angels, California Angels, Los Angeles Angels

The Cubs stadium WASN'T named for chewing gum. The chewing gum was named WRIGLEYS after the family name who owned the company, as was WRIGLEY FIELD. I don't have a problem with FAMILY NAMES given to sports arenas or even the team name itself (i.e.-CLEVELAND BROWNS), but CORPORATE names annoy the sh*t out of me.
I actually had a couple of White Sox fans GET OFFENDED because I dared call Comiskey Park by it's REAL name-COMISKEY PARK!

Shea Stadium is named for Bill Shea, a lawyer. I think he had a lot to do with NY getting the Mets as an expansion team after the Dodgers and Giants moved to California.

The idea of naming it Horace Stoneham Field didn't go over so well, eh?

The same as Miller Park was named after Fred Miller and not the company he built?

J/K...Again, you are right, Wrigley sounds better than US Cellular. But I stand by my statement that the original name of a stadium should always be the name, regardless.

In Houston, they should've been forced to keep "Enron Field" as the moniker. Serve the Astros right for taking money from criminals.

Yeah, he must really sweat a lot making some of those dumb decisions of his.
It's going to be a LONG season for him with no LaTroy Hawkins on the roster.
Of course, I still stand by the prediction I made over a month ago when I said he'd be the first manager to be fired in 2006.
