This is all WAY too late. This should have been done in the early 90's. But...Home runs were making money for owners (ticket sales, advertising), players (saleries, endorsements), agents (see players) and media (sales in air time, sales of papers, higher ratings) equally. This only became an "issue" when the money was not being made equally. The players/agents increased their take much faster than the rest.Quiet and Shy wrote:So, what are the thoughts around this new steroid investigation committee that Selig's established? Will they have any teeth? Will they be able to do something about Bonds before he's allowed to pass Babe Ruth?

First, the Onion article...they forgot to mention how Steinbrenner switched his scapegoat to A-Rod once October rolled around each year.
About the steroid investigation, I don't know what the investigation will prove. These guys were technically doing nothing wrong per MLB rules at the time, so you can't punish them for doing something that was ok at the time. As much as I want to see Bonds go down, I doubt much will happen other than maybe some reputations tarnished, and in the case of Bonds, there's not much left to tarnish. And don't forget, owners and Selig looked the other while the bulk of this was happening.
Also, according to the Oakland Tribune's Glenn Reeves, San Francisco Giants SS Omar Vizquel disagrees with the focus on past behavior in Major League Baseball's investigation of steroid use and says OF Barry Bonds has been a target. "I don't know if players knew what was in the law," Vizquel said. "I knew cocaine was against the law. I didn't know what kind of steroids were against the law. Who knows what Hank Aaron was taking," said Vizquel, who said he wasn't accusing Aaron of anything. "Players will always find a way to get strength from something. We don't know if balls were juiced or bats were corked. There's so much in baseball we don't know about." I don't necessarily agree with that but for those who read ESPN the Magazine and are familiar with their "0:01" feature, a while back that they had a list of the top 10 home run hitters of all time. Each hitter had a different * next to their name for a different reason. The memory's hazy on what they were other than steroids and I wish I still had that. I'm sure I agree with it, but I'm just throwing that out there.

Don't expect anything of substance from the investigation. Remember, Baseball is now a business. No business is going to hurt the assests that bring in mondo dollarlujiah's!! Won't EVER happen. I swear in the next 5 years the average MLB uniform will look like he races for NASCAR with all the logos on thier jersey. Hell, almost every home run has a sponcer now, right?
Maybe it's just a California thing.

I'd just like to see Bonds stopped from passing Ruth and Aaron...and if baseball leadership won't do it, pitchers should just put him on base. Someone somewhere needs to honor the game.jonesbeach10 wrote:First, the Onion article...they forgot to mention how Steinbrenner switched his scapegoat to A-Rod once October rolled around each year.

I realized that the Mets are almost the exact same team as the Yankees. Both have a potent offense and the questionmarks are the health of the rotation and the depth of the pen.LIPH wrote:LET'S GO METS!!!

And I still bristle at the "but it was allowed in baseball" argument. For something to be allowed in baseball that was illegal outside the sport is beyond rediculous.

So it's all good from here, right?
Bonds is the just most focal point. Should McGuire have his record stripped? He creid before the Senate. Just how many pitchers are/were juiced too? Remember when a Tommy John injury was about the end of one's career. Now after the miracles of modern medicine, pitchers come back with more speed. Has medicine affected the modern record book? Bring back wool uniforms, three fingered gloves you leave on the field between innings and Sunday double headers. Remove the lights from "Smith" stadium and make everyone plant grass!! While you're at it, get rid of that damn DH spot!
BTW, there was a really good story in one of the sporting mags a few years back on how Willie Mays spent some time with Barry on his stance and swing. Willie opened him up a bit. I don't condone beef steroids, but you still have to hit the damn ball. Like it or not, the dude hits the ball.
Sincerely,
Crash Davis

I agree with Q&S. If the management won't do it, somebody else should stop Bonds. And even though I'm a lifelong Cardinals fan, if McGwire is proven to be on steroids at ANY time during his career, his title should be stripped, as well as any other player who has used steroids. They pervert the whole game.

If Big Mac was not juiced, why did he break down and cry when he was asked infront of the Senate hearing if he use steroids? At least Sammy suddenly forgot how to speak english!
