Scarlet Begonias

Post by Conchytonk11 »

I was perousing Amazon.com and decided to see what the customer reviews were for License to Chill. One of the reviews I read questioned why SB was on the CD, and then said it probably was recorded because it was one of Jimmy's mom's favorite songs, and it was his tribute to her.

I always thought he did it as more of a tribute to Jerry Garcia and the Dead, he respected/liked/played with them before. Anyone know if there's any truth to the song being a favorite of Peets'?

Kind of just made me wonder...

From what I remember-Jimmy said he was sitting outside the Shrimp Boat Sound studio and heard the band playing the song. He liked it, and went in, and did it in one take. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Yeah. I remember something about him overlapping a tour stop with the Dead once and he got to know Jerry and has always liked the Dead. SB may just be one of his favorite songs that lent itself to a tropical sound easier than the others.
"Oh all the money that e'er I spent, I spent it in good company.
And all the harm that I ever did, Alas it was to none but me.
And since it falls, unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, 'Goodnight and Joy be with you all.'"

I would rather listen to Math Sucks, the Hokey Pokey Song, and Simply Complicated than to hear Jimmy do SB. I was looking forward to it when I saw it on the CD, and was severely disappointed when I listened to it.
Sorry Jimmy! After so many albums and so many songs, they can't all be hits- :pirate:

I actually like Math Suks, and Simply Complicated. Scarlet Begonias, either the studio version, the concert version, or the one with him lit and 4 sheets to the wind in KW, leaves me cold.

I still prefer the original by the Grateful Dead but I have no problem with Buffett's version. I also like License To Chill for the most part.

I also like "U.S.S. Zydecoldsmobile" but I'm also a big Sonny Landreth fan.

I finally heard the Dead's original a while back and found it rather boring compared to Jimmy's upbeat version. Same with Uncle John's Band but then I don't "get" the Dead anyway.

There are songs by the Dead he could do, but Scarlet Begonias is not one of them. "Friend of the Devil" could be good. Turn Mac and Peter loose, and let Robot have a minute for solos, and it could be pretty good. Especially as an encore. You might only get two songs, but if one of those is a 10-12 minute jam... that would be a cut for iTunes. :)

sorry to hear that - the Dead's version is awesome. JB's is good, and is satisfactory for a cover, but the Dead's version captures a lot more. There's something about the more melodic chill approach that the Dead exhibited, whereas JB's is more rehearsed and studio sounding - almost over produced. But still good.

Side note - majority of LTC is just OK. It's not his best new album
