Does jimmy mean what i think he means by the lyric?

Post by reed69 »

From boat drinks , ive always wondered this

I gotta go where there ain't any snow
Where there ain't any blow
'Cause my fin sinks so low
I gotta go where it's warm

I've always known jimmy used to smoke marijuana, but has he ever said anything about messing with other things? During the 70's im guessing blow was pretty popular so just wondering if this is what he means by this part of the song?

I always thought that's what he meant. He mentioned cocaine in the live version of Margaritaville from You Had to Be There and in Kick It In Second Wind from Havana Daydreamin'. LSD usage was alluded to in the liner notes to A White Sportcoat and more blatantly in the song Ellis Dee.

I think you might be reading too much into it. Blow in that sense doesn't really fit in the context. I really think that in this case he simply means cold wind. Doesn't want snow and cold wind, wants to go where it's warm.

I'm sure about the LSD. . .

If you guys go to that one website, yeah - that one! And download the Lulu's concert for his mother's 80th birthday... I believe in the intro to Pencil Thin Mustache he talks about how his Mom used to love to drop by to visit, "Most of the time it was announced, but occasionally she would just drop by. It was on one such occasion that she found me and a friend completely high on pyschedelic's. I said 'Hi, Mom" I invited my mom in gave her a big hug and told her come out to the garden, we're watching the plants grow! Mom, meet my friend Rainbowwww!"
It was one of JB's funnier stories. Granted it could have been mushrooms or something else, but I got the impression it was ol' Lucy.

Chemical daydreams are mentioned on the back cover of A White Sportcoat by his brother in law, author Tom McGuane so I would think he knows of what he speaks. Just sayin'...

I've noticed, especially with 60s and 70s bands, that some people like to create some type of revisionist history where their favorite performers were free of all the decadence of the time and Buffett is no exception. Lynyrd Skynyrd is another. As un-PC as it now seems, they were Southern rednecks and alcholics and made no bones about it at the time. Certainly nothing to be proud of but some of their fans like to try to sweep all of that under the rug as though it never happened. That, to me, is worse than the stuff they're trying to cover up.

You are quite correct there...it happened... I've seen it almost denied here, by some...

and the music industry was in the thick of it...Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, just to name a few.

although, I don't think Buffett was into the heroin scene.

He also talks about doing quite a bit of speed. I think the most discussion I've seen on drug use is in APLA50. When he talks about giving up drugs he says something about it not being as much fun as he neared 40 and "didn't want his mother to read about his death from the usual causes." I've never seen anything about him going the rehab route. Flying and surfing seem to be the newer "vices".

But the "Boat Drinks" line makes sense re. a cold wind (e.g. Chicago in January) vs. being about drugs (since it's something he's trying to avoid).

Boat Drinks is definitely about the wind (live in a Chicago winter and find that one out!!!)

Seriously I don't remember if that term was around during those days (blow).... I think that might have been a later 80's slang for it. (By that time boat drinks was already written).....

Actually watch (or listen to ) the Fenway disc. Boat Drinks is about a time he spent 20+ years ago in Boston when it was so cold he "borrowed" a taxi cab to get out of the wind and drove to a bar and watched a hockey game. Something like that. . . Ironically, years later after the first Fenway (Phenway?:-)) show he was given a police escort back to that bar.

What did Mac say on his disc about Semi-True Stories?

I wouldn't even begin to try to explain what he meant by that line in Boat Drinks....guess you'd have to ask him, personally, about that...

but blow being coke, was around long before the 80's...I can tell you that, for sure

I would find it extremely hard to believe that JB didn't experiment with all types of drugs. Growing up in the 60's and 70's, it was more the norm than the exception. At least in my neck of the woods........
I think there are hints to that effect in lyrics, his writing and articles throughout his career.
Check these lyrics out from Fool Button:

"And if you don't believe my words
Or think my story's true
Get a bottle of rum and an Eskatrol
And watch the same thing happen to you. "

For those of you who dont know, Eskatrol was a time released amphetamine that was very popular during that time.
