conched wrote:Can someone describe a Buffett show before Fruitcakes and since the Mayers joined in? Was Off to See The Lizard their first show. What was Feeding Frenzy like? It sounds fun on the CD. When did the shows change from the Live By The Bay type show, (where Mr. White Overalls and Fingers were the dancers?)
My recollection:

Generally, Jimmy (and probably the band) was in some sort of "induced state" or working his way there... ususally downing a few beers during the show.. . Didn't help or hurt the show in anyway, just seemed to be he's was getting where the crowd already was...

I always seemed to remember some element of the drums (Sam Clayton a number of times)...so my experience doesn't pre-date that...Josh was playing guitar thru most of my early shows, we know he can play...and of course there was Fingers & Utley...

It seemed he also always had an opening band...I recall the Neville brothers a few times, Zachary Richard a couple, Marshall Chapman and I'm sure I'm missing a few...

Props were generally not so great ( I remember a horrible blow-up Godzilla one year)...don't recall anything like the Tiki Gods, the volcanos, or flying sharks...It was basically a concert

The setlist generally contained the must plays ...He'd play more of the the older tunes because that's all he had at the time...The old tunes that rock now, rocked then... I think he's added more rockin (or at least energetic) tunes to the setlist now...That's why I think those that never experienced the earlier shows can't imagine them...

I'm not saying either is better or worse...The 2003 tour was as much fun as I ever had at a show (as much as my first)...The bigger band gave some old songs (saxophones for one) some great new life...I love the harmonica on Jimmy's tunes, and the bigger band conmpensated for that loss...

To each his own...While this year may be different than any in the last decade or so, I doubt seriously if it won't be worth the price of a ticket...

When I first heard of the loss of Amy and TC, my first thought was "maybe he's downscaling" to help with the cost of putting on a show. And just maybe this will help with the cost of tickets. Silly me!

When I go to a show, I don't go for just Jimmy. I enjoy the whole experience. The one thing that Jimmy does so different from any other concert I've been to is his stage, lights, dancers and over-all performance.

The last show I did attend, I was so pleased to hear the other artists be able to show their ware. I paid to see all of them!

You all know that he will sell out regardless. And if I were able to go back to the mainland to see him, I'd buy a ticket. The road doesn't go on forever, and the party WILL end someday.

Anyone who is on the fence about this or just doesn't think these changes will matter.....
STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING and take a listen to One Particular Harbor off the Tues Thurs & Sat CD. Now just imagine that you will never hear that song played that way LIVE again- with that full-on, attacking bravado of the horn section... I'm sorry- that realization makes it a sad day in Jimmyland for many of us. Hopefully Amy & TC can make surprise guest appearances in the future maybe just on that tune.. :( :( :(

How do you know this? This tour doesn't have the horns....I don't see anything written in blood that the next one....if and when there will be a next one.....has to be the same.
Well I’m a tidal pool explorer
From the days of my misspent youth
I believe that down on the beach
Where the seagulls preach
Is where the Chinese buried the truth...

This is true, no one knows anything for sure...next year could be the farewell tour for all we know ...what we do know is Amy and TC are gone & those of us who appreciated what they did for the band will miss their presence. It's always Jimmy's show and Jimmy's call and we the loyal phlock will always be there to celebrate either way. Just remember, though, many of us also thought Fingers would be back at some point- ain't looking good...

I want the Ballads to sound like on You Had to be there, with Fingers laying it down on he went to Paris etc..., I want the girls to have to voices they had back on Feeding Frenzy, and the Dance songs like One Particular Harbor to rock like Tuesdays. Thursdays and Staurdays with the Horns that don't stop. No Dancers or flying Cheeseburgers. The FLying Shark is ok.

The shadow of the guy taking a whiz off to the side also takes away from the fin on top of the SUV.
