Nassau Community College v. Ferrum

There's an error in the poll. The original six in the NHL was:
Bruins
Red Wings
Rangers
Black Hawks
Maple Leafs
Canadiens.

The Flyers were an expansion team.

I only follow sports in very limited amounts, but I can attest to the fact that if you want to get people in Virginia riled up when talking about college sports, just mention UVA vs. Va. Tech.

The other "biggie" (and I speak of this first hand) is Redskins vs. Cowboys. The rivalry has been "better" some years than others, but has NEVER been lacking in passion.

Nothing against the rivalries actually listed in the poll, but none of them come close to the level of passion in college football.

Auburn/Alabama
Oklahoma/texas
Army/Navy
Florida/everyone else in the SEC
Michigan/Ohio St.
Clemson/South Carolina
The list goes on . . .

A hokie is a made up name. Actually means nothing. There was a contest to name the mascot tand that is what won. Go to www.hokiesports.com for the full story. Im glad melli rang in. I was waiting to hear Steelers and Browns

WHAT'S A HOKIE?
The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body.
Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his "Hokie" yell which is still used today. Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics.

The official university school colors - Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange - also were introduced in 1896. The colors were chosen by a committee because they made a 'unique combination' not worn elsewhere at the time.
The official definition of "hokie" is "a loyal Virginia Tech Fan".

The HokieBird The bird is a "HokieBird" which has evolved from a turkey.

Virginia Tech teams were once called the "gobblers"!

"Old Hokie" Cheer

Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi!

Tech, Tech, VPI

Sol-a-rex, Sol-a-rah

Poly Tech Vir-gin-ia

Ray rah VPI

Team! Team! Team!

That's old news to a chick from a family full of Va. Tech alumni. But a great education for the rest of the gang! Thanks, Clintster! :D
(My niece, who is the "product" of two Tech alumni, is named "Virginia" for the University and the state. She has always been proud of the fact that her initials are "VT" as in "Virginia Tech." :D I also have a friend whose dog is named "Beamer" after the coach there) :D

Baseball: Sox/Yanks

Pro Football: Steelers/Browns

Overall best rivalry: Michigan/Ohio State, although there are other good ones, nothing beats the Scarlet and Gray v. Maize and Blue on one Saturday a year in November in either Stadium.

Although it's not really regional, the Washington Redskins/Dallas Cowboys rivalry gets pretty intresting sometimes.
