New book paints bad picture of Buffett

I used to work with a phriend who's Wife worked at Simon & Schuster. He said that There is a book coming out about "the real Jimmy Buffett" From an ex-employee with the band. Sounds like a bunch of sour grapes. The book that is due to come out next year, paints Jimmy as an egomaniac, Very hard to work for. Controling. Is this true? He is a business man. With a lot of $$. I think that every person has some exfriends somewhere. Any info that would help dispell this story? This sounds like an urban legend to me.

I don't think many on BN are qualified to answer the questions you ask, so most feedback will be pure speculation.

A lot of people are hard to work for. If you don't like it, quit. Don't try and make money off of it by writing a tell-all book....
People like this p*** me off to no end... Oh my god! My employer yelled at me! s*** it up and take it. Or quit. But no, idiots have to write a book and make money off of it.

While it's true any comments are speculation, you don't get to the position he's in without being driven to succeed. I'm sure some peoples' toes have been stepped on over the years, but one man's drive is another man's egomania. And if it were me paying the bills you can be damn sure I'd be controlling. My way or the highway.

I've heard more than my fair share of tales from very reliable sources that cast Buffett in a less than favorable light. From another perspective I think it's hard for many to separate the man from the myth. With A Pirate Looks at 50 I was really hoping for more of a peek into the mind of the real Jimmy Buffett but for the most part that didn't seem to be what he was aiming for at all with that book. If that side of the story is ever told, I'd take much more stock in it if it came from the man himself rather than an "unauthorized" version.

Business wise Mr. Buffett is as savvy and direct as anyone as successful as him. Personally, in his own enviornment, he is a great guy. But as much as he makes it appear to the world, business and pleasure don't always go hand in hand.

I'm in it for the music and lifestyle that he promotes.
Personally, I don't care if he is tough to work for....in fact, I might respect him more for being a controlling boss.

in jimmy's own words he's described his operation as a benevolent dictatorship
in 30 plus years i'm sure there's been times when it's been more dictatorship than benevolent.

Music is not an easy business. You are bound to step on a phew toes along the way. He owns the balls, gloves and the bat. It's his show. I am just trying to find out. This forum has alot of answers to lifes questions. Thats all.

He's human. Everybody has their share of bad days and going half mad days. But to take that, and probably "embellish" the truth, with the idea of signing a huge book deal, just stinks of bullsh...
I have no doubt that he can be controlling or hard to work for at times. You don't get to be that successful without being partially controlling. But I also have no doubt that the book will have half-truths, and exaggerated stories, to sell more books, and ultimately make more money for the idiot who writes it.

I think you're right on target. Business requires some hard decisions, and as the boss, there's no way to make everyone happy all the time - especially if you end up with an employee who doesn't pull his/her weight...
I ain't Jimmy, but when I'm the guy paying the bills... if we're going down in flames, we're going down doing it my way.

an ironic analogy is right under own noses. the discussion board right here at BN.
how many times has a disgruntled poster complained about their free speech rights being trampled by the moderators enforcing phjim's rules, uneven enforcement, etc. etc etc etc........ maybe they should write a tell-all book about it

Jimmy joked about this very thing in "The weather is here..." The intro in the beginning when folks are whining about per diem, and he screams "DON'T EVER START A BAND!"

Probably written by a lazy, incompetent, slacker minor employee.
Jimmy will just laugh at it.

I can think of a few BN'rs who's posts resemble a book!

I have never heard anything so f**** arrogant in my entire life.
If you think you're qualified to be a leader, you must have the skills to persuade, not just railroad.

I forget if I heard it on BN or somewhere else, but I heard Jimmy is VERY particular about the details of his products and his shows. His name is attached to everything and he cares very much about quality. In ensuring that quality, he undoubtedly has to remind his employees of his standards. THEIR names and repuatations are not at stake. I'm sure that sometimes he is less than patient in dealing with his employees. Also, that putting together a tour, the act of touring, writing songs, recording, writing books, etc., etc., can be HIGHLY stressful, and so he might not always be 100% polite. Most human beings WILL lose their tempers when stressed and tired.
I work for an employer whose name is synonymous with very high quality. They are obsessed with maintaining that reputation. We all know what is expected of us. If we fall short, sometimes we are reprimanded. Sometimes in a nice way, sometimes in a nasty way. We s**k it up because we reap many benefits that come with working with a highly reputable employer. People who don't like it leave.
Jimmy has worked darn hard to get to where he is. Don't forget he's had times both poor and in a mind-altered haze. He struggled for a bit to get where he is. He is proud of that achievement and it's his right to protect his reputation, even if it means being hard on employees.
