I have to say I agree with you, Sy. And that's ALL I'm going to say here.sy wrote: A little bit of relative humor interjected into a situation goes a lot farther than a grim faced, limited discussion. Doesn't make anyone a better or worse person for it.

Re: So how come....
I'm not sure what seeing a couple of pictures or videos has to do with a comment. Doesn't mean I also don't support someone being able to say something offcolor in reference to some rather heated discussions that went on earlier last week. I could stand there and watch the slaughter itself and still be able to take a comment in the context that it was made.Sam wrote:Perhaps if she or you, or anyone else that thought such slaughter was so humorous and was so funny or excusable had actcually watched the videos or looked at the stills of the baby seals being clubbed to death and skinned and some being skinned while alive....I doubt would make or attempt to justify such a statement.
I didn't mean anything by what I said earlier, I only meant to say that the comment wasn't made in an offensive way, even though some will take it that way.

I do not find your suggestion to be anything but sickening and showing a blatant disregard of respect for life in general.
I could easily make off colored humorous comments that would be blatantly offensive and against everything I believe in.
I would probably laugh at them, too. Doesn't mean I support or believe it.
If we couldn't laugh we'd all go insanePerfectly said!
I find it difficult to imagine Buffett laughing over something like what happened on the ice floe today. or him laughing over the wanton slaughter of any marine life...
NO? hmmm I'm not so sure...I found it extremely insensitive, at best. It was a very extreme statement.
AND the subject matter would have probably not been mentioned again, here...not by me.....Oh well...

Well, that's what's good about everyone being different in a discussion. What might be insensitive and extreme to one may be simply sarcastic to another and that always makes for an in-depth debate.Moonie wrote: NO? hmmm I'm not so sure...I found it extremely insensitive, at best. Like I said, any topic can be made light of, regardless of how tragic or 'unfunny' it is. If it couldn't, a lot of comedians would be out of a job. It's all in how people deal with tragedy and different issues.

Thank you for feeling that way. I still do not find such a comments made by Mai or anyone trying to justify the bad judgement used in stating them, to be humor or remotely funny. I find them repugnant and insulting, ( not to mention in mush less than poor taste ) especially from a parrothead.
It is not about me or Suz, or Garry or any of our, or anyone else's critters....it is about the needless slaughter of baby harp seals. It is about people thinking such an act is funny and humorous, and I doubt anyone trying to justify such comments, would find such humor in it if their critter was slaughtered simply for it's hide...and someone tried to make a crude, rude,"off color" joke about it.... Then again there are a lot of demented and sick minded individuals out there, as we hear about them or their actions all too often, unfortunately.

Well ya know Sy...after Richard Pryor set himself on fire..a lot of very very funny jokes went around..a good number of them told by himself...
and his stand up about it was simply hilarious...
but that was after the fact..and I don't recall anyone making any off color remarks, jokes, or offensive discussion about it, until after everyone had been assured he would survive...
Personally, yeah...I knew what this morning was going to bring to the ice floes...

Re: So how come....
There are more than a couple of videos and still pictures. they are taken every year. The blood and gore of slaughtering 325,000 baby harp seals in the snow and on the ice, leaves a very visible memorable and unforgetable vision in ones mind.sy wrote:I'm not sure what seeing a couple of pictures or videos has to do with a comment. Sure a person has the RIGHT to say it, but that does not mean that they should say it. It means they have the responsibility for what they said. They get called on it, is no reason to justify the Right or the conduct is it?
They have the Right to say it...they also have the Right to get called on it.
I would NOT stand there and watch baby harp seals being slaughtered and beaten to death, for no reason other than their hides/fur/skins, any more than I would stand by and let someone torture an animal for the scheer depravity/meaness/ or whatever you want to cal of it.
I know you meant no offense/mean anything badly in what you said earlier.
I don't know if the comments Mal made, were meant offensively or not. I can say that I DID take offense to the statement. I did not want to laugh at the statement or find anything about it remotely funny. I found it to be worse than an "off color" attempt at humor.

So, it's not insensitive to post links to what some folks think are brutal seal murders, but it's insensitive to make tongue-in-cheek comments about it?
We've been counting down to this day on BN for weeks. A little recognition for the seal slaughter is all I was pimping.
Hello kettle? Meet pot. You're black. (and for the love of Goddess that's not a racist comment
)
And yes, more rum, please.

Well, the whole seal slaughter thing has been plastered all over BN for weeks. In essence, everyone who has participated in those threads has been 'pimping' either for or against the seal slaughter.Moonie wrote:buffettbride wrote:

what an odd thing to say....
The language I've chosen is obviously not in harmony with your opinion.

Clearly you are admitting you have been waiting to use that line by counting down the weeks.....and you were pimping it.
You clearly wanted to cause trouble, and you knew it would cause trouble and no doubt you did and you find that humorous. You find it humorous that marine manmmals are being slaughtered. You find it humourous that 325,000 baby harp seals are being slaughtered and clubbed to death...and pimp the idea. Certainly not about awareness of the issue. Nor care about the slaughter itself.
I find it offensive and repugnant, that any parrothead would do such involving marine manmmals.
What do you do for an encore? Nevermind I don't want to know. I really could have done without your comment about today.. and I certainly can do without your encore.

I kinda wish someone would club you. Naturally, I mean that in the "cartoon" sense of the word. Why are you not in the North Atlantic protesting this the way it should be protested?Sam wrote:BULLBLEEP!!!
