UAHparrothead wrote:Zeus never wanted a direct relationship with humans, unlike the God of the Juedo/Christian/Muslim Scriptures. The New Testament tells of a God who seeks a direct relationship with humanity. The Greeks seem to view their gods and goddesses as dieties that did not commune with humanity, expect for their own selfish desires.

Although, there are many tele-evangelists who think differently, I don't see the Bible as a collection stories meant to scare people into submission, but stories of God and his relationship (both in positive and negative contexts) with humanity, from creation to the redemption of humanity by the death and Resurrection of Jesus. But unfortunatly, fear sells, or rather fear makes people reach in their wallets and it also maintains loyalty, not to God, but to a particular church leader without question.
so you believe in Zeus?
I wasn't referring to belief in one or the other, just in the differences between the narratives of the Greeks and those of the Juedo-Christian Bible

I agree. And to make matters worse, I've mentioned this to several other people and they didn't understand why I was shocked by this.

PS: To answer another question, I do not know exactly what year of bible college he was in...but I believe he was just starting, or had only been there a semester.

That's a little scary, that people can be that Anglo-centric...... :o

Wonder how many people would totally flip out if they really realized that Jesus had brown skin?

I can understand why you may feel they are 'wacko'....it's hard for most Americans, who view Greek mythology as nothing more then literature to see it as a religion, but Hellenics are some of the best educated people I've run across....and better yet, they aren't trying to force anyone to believe as they do.

I am a Pagan-leaning agnostic.....I do not believe that any form of faith can be proven and that any concept of 'God' is unknowable to humans (since we aren't Gods). But to me, the many Pagan faiths make as much sense of Christianity....even more so in many cases.

Whether or not you believe he was the Messiah or a Prophet, the man Jesus was a historical person. He was Aramaic, and Aramaics have brown skin, as opposed to the pale skin of an Anglo-Saxon/Caucasian. There are historical descriptions of Jesus written by Roman soldiers telling of his brown skin and unusual blue eyes.

If I had to make a reasonable assumption I'd say someone of Semitic background who lived in the Middle East two thousand years ago was probably not the caucasian stereotype popular in European artwork since that time. :D

Cheers.

That's somewhat unlikely for an Aramaic/Palestinian/Jewish person.

i agree completely. just pointing out that there are a lot of people who feel they know the truth. lots of different versions of the truth out there when it comes to religion

The Religious Extreamist is what scares me. Most Religons are of a peaceful nature. People who bomb abortion clinics in the name of Jesus or fly planes into buildings in the name of Mohammad are not true to their religious roots.

it doesnt take much to be an extremist in my opinion though. while they may not be extremist there are far too many people in the world who make decisions based on religion.
i dont consider the president one but i really believe he makes a lot of decisions based on his faith, which scares me.
