Decorating car for a show

I want to decorate my car for the Alpine show. I was thinking about putting a giant fin on the car... any ideas on how to do this? What have you done in the past, what worked, what didn't work?

Didn't work:
The high-dive springboard into the sunroof was a bust because the doors were not air tight so the water kept leaking out. :(
The parrot aviary would have been a big hit if I hadn't fed them beef-a-rino.
And DO NOT attempt the live shark dunk tank, man that got ugly real quick.

I've never put one on my car, but have seen some people. The ones that lasted the best had some type of strap that would go through the doors and attach inside the car.

I don't think it's here, but I know some Buffett board (CoB,O maybe) has an entire section dedicated to this topic.

It stands for Church of Buffett, Orthodox. It's much less friendly than people are around here, at least from what little I've seen of it (and hard to navigate). I think it's cobo.org, but it may be .com.

I built a three-foot tall fin for my SUV that worked with the roof-ski rack. I'm rather proud that it wasn't a simple piece of cardboard, my fin has girth!! I've seen too many of the last-minute decision fins, though I commend anyone that tries to decorate.

I'd post some pictures, but I'm not sure how. And the pictures may be a bit large.

Decorating your vehicle proves that you're a real Parrot Head. How? Those of us that need something to keep us distracted, yet still Buffett oriented prior to the show. I have problems getting to sleep some nights because of the plan, or the need of a plan.

Last year I made some modifications to my fin, and I didn't even attend a show. But it's never too early to work on it for the next one.

What kind of a car do you have? Were you thinking shark fin, or something else?

I used poly-styrene foam (insulation) for my fin. It is strong, yet light, and easy to come by (Home Depot…construction site, whichever). It soaks up lots of paint though, but is very easy to shape.

:D :D :D :D :D For the dunk tank did you remember to use blood in the water to get the sharks attention?

I saw a grass skirt on a car.... it looked super!! Looks like they uses the table covers that look like grass skirts...and attached them into 1 giant skirt around the whole car. The rest of the car had inflatable planes, flamingos and parrots.... very clever!

The Oriental Trading Post has a TON of tropical themed items. I stocked up for the tiki bar we are building this year. I dont have my tickets yet (stupid ticketmaster), but I'll get them. There werent any fins I can remember, lol, but there might be some other stuff to help accessorize the fin...

A couple of years ago we built a mammoth 48 inch fin. The key to this is anchoring it to a large piece of plywood. Next use boat straps and run these through your car doors. Should be a piece of cake. Don't mess around with a cardboard fin...looks amaturish. Use heavy duty plywood with a good waterproof paint.

I built a metal fin and bolted it to a 15x5 inch magnet.
Not the biggest but I was able to drive on the interstate with it on top of the vehicle, although it did get scary for a second when the state trooper was on my tail before passing.
If somehow it would have came off that sucker would have prolly decapitated somebody

Didn't have to. Used hammerheads so the first dunk took care of the blood aspect.

Last year I saw a grass skirt on an RV on the way to the show, not sure if it made it all the way on the highway trip or not. But it looked pretty cool..

We did something similar and our anchor to the base was a 2x4 on each side of the fin nailed to the base and the fin. Good stabilization. Worked great until it started to rian. We hadn't used the waterproof paint and byt he time the show ended the fin was leaning so far over it looked, as I like to say, like Free Willy's dorsal. But we got a ton of "limp fin" comments. Needless to say, the fin is in redesign mode.
