My Tailgate Tiki Hut

Post by CheeseHead in Paradise! »

I plan to build a tailgate tiki hut. I was wondering if anyone has built one and has photos they want share. I want it to be something 2-4 people can actually sit down in, rather than just your typical tiki bar. I don't know why my brain thinks of these things, but now I'm hell bent on doing this before concert season!

Any tips, suggestions, photos would be greatly appreciated! :D

I second the motion - and the notion!

STep one, learned the hard way in Cinci last year. Know the kind of ground you are going to have to work with. We did a test run, using tie lines to hold the supports up. The ground at the tailgate could not take stakes at all. Had a very difficult time getting the lines tied down. This year we found some 6 foot bamboo poles, about 4 inches wide at Pier one, 3 for $5. I'm still experimenting with how to keep them secure. I'll take any ideas on that.

I have some friends who built a bar (not a tiki) and they built theirs so it flat packs. It makes it easier to transport. It was built using either 2x4 or 2x3's (maybe a combination) and plywood. They made it so that the sides are on hinges and they fold against the front. The top is removable and it fits right over the front and sides. The top is pretty neat as they built the frame then used 4x4 ceremic tiles for the bar surface. They found some with pastels and some with parrots on them, but you could always paint them yourself.
As for a canopy you can always pilot drill the holes and use big nuts and bolts to hold it together. You can also use a cordless drill to put everything together, don't forget to make sure the bbattery is fully charged :D

Hope that helps

We used our landscape trailer to build our tiki bar on. That way we didn't have to worry about the ground surface - and we just put the back end down so you walked up a ramp to get to the bar. We actually had a recliner set up on the trailer and were doing upsidedown margarita shots from the tiki bar. We used 2x4s and built a roof on the tiki bar. We wrapped the bottom in a bamboo blanket and put straw on the roof. Wish I had a photo of it - we have video but that doesn't help. We'll probably do the same thing for ATL this year.

Assuming most of the use will be outdoors, what kind of wood would you use? Pressure-treated? Or regular plywood, and varnish it?

There seems to be 2 kinds...I do have the dried skirts in my margaritaville room at the windows but was wondering if the ones that look shiney & sort of a plastic -like were good for outdoors? Thanks for the info.

What kind of vehicle are you tailgating out of? That would make a difference in your design. A truck would be easiest because of the bed rail holes. You could go from the side with a 4x8 sheet of plywood hula grassed up as the roof. 2 bamboo poles maybe 5 feet high as the truck bed to roof supports and maybe some 6-7 footers for the ground to roof. cut some circular holes in the corners of the plywood a little bigger than the circumference of the bamboo. The on the ends of the bamboo that go into the roof drill holes and put dowels through 4-5 inches down to provide a stop for the roof to rest on. Packs up quick in the truck bed and doesn't require power tools after the initial work.
