Hitting a Police Officer 'No Big Deal?' Republicans Ask

(CNSNews.com) - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says she "wouldn't make a big deal" out of Rep. Cynthia McKinney's alleged assault on a Capitol Hill police officer.

Pelosi on Thursday called the incident a "mistake" -- due to the "unfortunate lack of recognition of a Member of Congress."

Rep. McKinney, a Georgia Democrat, allegedly struck a Capitol Police officer in the chest Wednesday afternoon, when he asked her to go through a metal detector in a House office building.

Although members of Congress are not required to go through metal detectors, the officer apparently did not recognize McKinney, who admitted she was not wearing a pin that identifies her as a member of Congress. She reportedly struck him when he put his hand on her shoulder to guide her back to the metal detector.

A group that works to elect Republicans to the House called it "highly regrettable" that House minority leader Pelosi would "dismiss an assault on a member of the law enforcement community as not worthy of further scrutiny.

"The Minority Leader's remarks today demonstrate a clear lack of respect for the millions of Americans who help keep our communities safe and our borders secure," said the Republican National Congressional Committee.

The NRCC also noted that McKinney, in a statement on her website, never apologized for hitting the police officer.

She simply said she "appreciates" the work the police do and "deeply regrets" that the incident took place. She said she continues to "support" the police.

Fox News Channel reported that McKinney, accompanied by her attorney, will hold a press conference Friday morning.

Capitol Police reportedly are investigating the incident, but press reports said surveillance tape supposedly showing McKinney hitting the officer will not be released.

I despise arrogance...... It's pure arrogance to get p*ssed off when you're not recognized, even though you consistently blow off wearing the pin that signifies your position.

I wish the officer had pepper-sprayed her.

Gotta love her and antics too!!! 8)

Here is another article about the incident....
Unfortunately the officer will no doubt be suffering repercussions for this.
I hope he suffers none whatsoever.

She is not above the law and deserves no special treatment. I wonder what was so important about that meeting and who she was meeting.

She was clearly in the wrong for not wearing the id pin that such people are required to wear.

Clearly she owes the officer an apology at the very least.

McKinney: 'I Was Rushing to An Important Meeting…'
By Susan Jones

(CNSNews.com) - Rep. Cynthia McKinney, a liberal Democrat from Georgia, says she "deeply regrets" her "unfortunate confrontation" with a Capitol Hill police officer on Wednesday.

McKinney reportedly struck the officer in the chest when he stopped her for bypassing a metal detector, something that members of Congress are allowed to do.

The officer apparently did not recognize McKinney, who struck him when he put his hand on her arm to get her attention.

Capitol Police say they are investigating the incident, which happened around 2:30 p.m. in the Longworth House Office Building - and was captured on tape, according to the Drudge Report.

In a statement posted on her website, McKinney said, "I was urgently trying to get to an important meeting on time to fulfill my obligations to my constituents. Unfortunately, the Police Officer did not recognize me as a Member of Congress and a confrontation ensued. I did not have on my Congressional pin but showed the Police Officer my Congressional ID.

"I know that Capitol Hill Police are securing our safety, that of thousands of others, and I appreciate the work that they do. I deeply regret that the incident occurred. I have demonstrated my support for them in the past and I continue to support them now."

A spokesman for House Speaker Dennis Hastert - quoted by Fox News - said, "On a day when the Democrats are promoting their national security agenda, it's probably not a good idea for them to allegedly strike police officers."

McKinney is no stranger to controversy. She made headlines in October 2001 for pursuing a $10 million check from a Saudi prince - after New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani returned it.

The money was intended to help victims of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, but Giuliani and many other Americans were offended when the prince suggested that the U.S. had brought the attacks on itself by supporting Israel at the expense of the Palestinians.

Then in March 2002, McKinney suggested the Bush administration had been warned about the Sept. 11 attacks - but had failed to act on those warnings.

First elected to Congress in 1992, McKinney served five terms until her primary defeat in 2002. She returned to Congress in 2004.

No, I'm not the least bit amused by her antics. I think her actions are reprehensible. I think she's an arrogant jerk who (like so many others in Washington) has lost sight of the fact that she is supposed to be serving the people, not vice versa.

From you? I've learned quickly to not expect much more then this sort of thing from you. I wonder....should we post all the bad behavior of congress critters across both parties? There is plenty of right-wing misbehavior.

Maybe we should post insults about all the states so no one feels left out?

Once again we are supposed to dismiss this type behavior because of her position. Maybe she should spend the weekend in a jail cell. It's not like she has anything important to plan for the upcoming week. Well as far as I'm concerned....LOL :D

I'm disappointed that anyone is allowed to enter without passing through the metal detectors.

I'm very disappointed that someone makes a habit of trying to go around the metal detector without wearing her member pin.

There is not an elected or appointed office anywhere that entitles a person to strike a police officer. Too bad the Capitol Police are not pressing charges. :-?

When I was in law school, one of the requirements for graduation was satisfying what they called the "upper level writing requirement." It was supposed to be a publishable paper (but it didn't have to be published). I rambled on for about 50 or 60 pages advocating term limits. I went so far as to quote the late great Walt Kelly's comic strip Pogo - We have met the enemy and he is us. The professor gave me an A, shocked the hell out of me. :o

Well at least you learned something and you have never met me. DAMN I AM GOOD!!! 8)
BTW ....HELLO Pot. or are you the Kettle?

I did not post it because of the person's political party. I posted it it because of what the person said. Clearly you have not been around very long and read various posts in here or you would see that almost every state has been slammed at least somewhat at one time or another. If you want to make that your life's goal....Go for it.

Obviously you have a good idea there posting all of the bad behavior of all the Congress. No doubt it might break up some of the voter apathy and force the parties to run people of better character and help get things where they should be.

Not all power to Left and not all power to the Right...but the power of the people should be remembered and enforced.

The Ultra/Far Left are just as bad as Ultra/Far Right.

So what I'm reading is that she was running late, forgot her pin, walked past the guy she walked past every day for the last 2 years (or at least a lot- her side sounds like she knew him), showed her badge, and some jerk who's basically been relegated to rent a cop status grabbed her. First rule of male-female interaction- you do not touch in any way that is unfriendly, and it doesn't matter whether you're a cop or bum. Second rule, you do not grab women, ever, especially when you're a white cop and she's a black woman from a bad part of a crappy racist city, especially when she's a member of Congress.

Sorry, I had more than a few bad experiences with one the rent a cops where I used to work, and if she had ever laid a hand on me, I know I would reacted the same way, and that's without all of the added racial tension (and I've never hit anyone or anything before).

Not a rent a cop. A sworn police officer.

Your "First rule of male-female interaction" is not valid when it comes to securing a government building. Securing the building and protecting lives is the officer's first duty.

To enjoy the privilege of not going through the metal detectors (and to identify herself) Ms. McKinney can wear her member pin, but she chooses not to.

She should have been arrested and charged.

The Republicans and their mouthpiece FOX NEWS are going to have to come up with something better than this to offset the record low approval rating of their boy in the Oval Office. :D

After all, they've been at the controls of EVERY branch of government for the last six years. Surely they could just point to their successes and run on their record, instead of this kind of third-string stuff from the back cover of the playbook.

Cheers.

Coconuts, you're way out of line.

These are not "rent-a-cops." They are Capitol police force. Now and again they get killed protecting members of Congress.

She did not forget her pin. She makes a habit of not wearing it, being arrogant enough to expect people to recognize her.

First rule of protecting people. If someone is a danger to those you're sworn to protect, you STOP THEM. She went around a metal detector. She refused an order to stop. She's now a danger to the other members of Congress. He asked her to stop. She didn't. It's his job to stop her. She's damned lucky he didn't pepper spray her when she hit him. Yes, you do grab a woman if she refuses your order to stop. A woman can be just as dangerous as a man.

Rent-a-cop? You want to tell that to the families of Officers Jacob Chestnut and John Gibson, both 18 year veterans of the Capitol Police Force, who were killed by a gunman in 1998? Because these police officers sacrificed their lives, more people did not die that day.

You're way out of line on this one.

Just to clarify, Nancy Pelosi didn't say "Hittting a Policeman is no big deal"
She said that she didn't wish to make a big deal out of this particular incident between a Capitol Hill police officer and another member of Congress. Obviously the group that works to elect Republicans to the House (and cnsnews.co) wishes to make a big deal of it.

I suspect the only opinion that matters in this regard is that of the Capitol Hill police. Why would anybody ask Nancy Pelosi that question when it should have been directed toward the police anyway? Rep. McKinney didn't hit Pelosi.

That said: hitting is not nice.

GEE...I wonder what you think about our military and security forces that protect and defend priority resources,weapons/weapon systems, aircraft, or bases or ships or subs... are they just degraded "rent a cops" too? Any idea of the training they go through or what PRP is?

How do you know that the officer involved was the same officer, there everyday? Did she know or recognize the officer? If she went throough that checkpoint everyday she KNOWS THE RULES!!! SHE BROKE THE RULE!!! She knows it. She was wrong.

How many faces can you immediately recognize when you see hundreds of, if not more, people every day?
Rent -A -Cop or not. Security was the issue. If some "Rent A-Cop" as you put it does something inappropriate then there are appropriate actions that can be taken. Aparently you blame everyone, instead of the individual you had the problem with. SHEESH....

Interesting since you brought up inappropriate touching...here you go.

McKinney Accuses Capitol Police of 'Inappropriate Touching'
By Randy Hall
CNSNews.com Staff Writer/Editor
March 31, 2006

(CNSNews.com) - Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.) claimed Friday that an altercation involving her and a Capitol Police officer two days earlier was "instigated by the inappropriate touching and stopping of me, a female black Congresswoman."

During a press conference at Howard University in Washington, D.C., McKinney said she had been advised by her attorneys not to discuss the facts of the case. "I deeply regret that this incident occurred," she said, "and I am certain that after a full review of the facts, I will be exonerated."

The six-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives was accompanied by her lawyer, James W. Myart, Jr., who claimed his client was "just a victim of being in Congress while black.

"Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, like thousands of average Americans across this country, is, too, a victim of the excessive use of force by law enforcement officials because of how she looks and the color of her skin," Myart said.

McKinney and Myart were surrounded by a small crowd of supporters, including several schoolchildren who happened to be in Washington, D.C., for a field trip. Also present were actor Danny Glover and singer Harry Belafonte, both of whom are regularly involved in political activism.

Regarding the Georgia Democrat, Glover stated "she alone has stood up for issues that are important to this country and important to the world. We're not here to judge the merits of the case. We're here to support our sister."

"In America and Washington, D.C., issues of race have always been at play and have often been central to justice miscarried," Belafonte stated. "We're here to be sure that this process is handled fairly and is not rooted in a familiar racist behavior, that the outcome of this is going to be done on a very fair and a very square basis."

As Cybercast News Service previously reported, the incident took place at about 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, as McKinney entered the Longworth House Office Building.

When she tried to bypass a metal detector, the six-term congresswoman -- who was not wearing the lapel pin that enables members of Congress to enter and exit the building freely -- was stopped by an officer with the Capitol Police.

The officer reportedly put his hand on McKinney's arm to get her attention, and she reacted by striking him in the chest.

"I was urgently trying to get to an important meeting on time to fulfill my obligations to my constituents," McKinney said later in a statement on her website. "Unfortunately, the police officer did not recognize me as a member of Congress, and a confrontation ensued. ... I deeply regret that the incident occurred."

On Thursday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she "wouldn't make a big deal" out of the confrontation, which she called a "mistake" that happened because of the "unfortunate lack of recognition of a member of Congress."

Nevertheless, rumors began to circulate around Washington that McKinney might be charged with a crime for hitting the officer, so the Georgia Democrat scheduled a press conference for Friday.

Myart also responded to the rumors by telling reporters he was considering filing charges against the officer for using "excessive force" while confronting his client.

"Congresswoman McKinney, in a hurry, was essentially chased and grabbed by the officer," Myart said. "She reacted instinctively in an effort to defend herself."

However, at least one Republican could not resist commenting on the congresswoman's decision to attend the press conference with Glover.

"Rep. McKinney appearing with the star of 'Lethal Weapon?' Not exactly the message you want to be sending," said Ron Bonjean, spokesman for House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.).
