Have you ever...

done something really stupid, like accidentally falling for a fraud paypal email asking you to update your account?

ugh, I think I just did. I questioned it right away and didn't go with my gut feeling of 'hmmm this is odd'. DAMN

So I immediately changed my passwords..and I've haulted my card.

It appeared to be from 'service@paypal.com' which is the correct address, but when i clicked on the paypal link..it took me to this: http://esup.org/paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/index.php

It's actually pretty clever and well done scam. If you take the domain only and look it up..see what you get....it's in gibberish!

Live and learn. You can go to google.com and search for "paypal scam". There are websites dedicated to paypal scam horror stories. Whenever I receive solicitations from a website, I always go to the website in question by typing in their generic www.com address and click on "contact us" (as opposed to using the link supplied in the email).

ya the good news here is a I realized what I did right away. So no horror stories. Just the inconvience of having to go without a card for a few weeks. *sigh*

that's better than going with any money for a few weeks.

At least you realized your mistake right away. And kudos to you for posting your error...you'll probably help someone else avoid the same scam.

Yes I looked up the root domain of that link (http://esup.org/), which led me to a page that was all in a foreign language..expept for this one part that said ChungBuk Forest For Life, so I googled taht...and that same name didn't come up the ChungBuk was a place in South Korea. So that's how I came to that conclusion.

The easy way to tell if it is legit or a spoof is that the legitimate ones from EBAY or from PAYPAL come addressed to you using whatever name you use for that account. The spoof ones are just generic.

When you get one, forward it to spoof@paypal.com.

Here is one sure way not to be scammed by fake emails.
I get them occasionally and have gotten real and definite fake emails. The way I look at it is I delete them all and reply to none of them because I figure if I go to use paypal or ebay and my info isn't current the site will prompt me to update and then I will know for sure that my info isn't being stolen.

I got a weird one from ebay a couple weeks ago... it was all completely coded with a bunch of ebay graphics, etc.

Question from eBay Member -- Respond Now [eBay]
eBay sent this message on behalf of an eBay member via My Messages. Responses sent using email will not reach the eBay member. Use the Respond Now button below to respond to this message.

Question from (deleted just cuz)

Hello ,
I've sent you the money and I have not receive any item from you! If you don't Respond Now and explain me what happen' I will contact eBay to report you and I also go to the police! I am waiting your Respond Now !You have to know I am not so stupid as you think!!! !

Thanks !
Respond to this question in My Messages.
Respond Now
Only, I've never sold anything on ebay... clicking on "respond now" said my acct had been suspended, and an email had been sent as to why. I never saw the other email, but going the direct route, I could log in fine, and I didn't have any messages in "My Messages" where this should have shown up if it was real. I'm guessing I may have deleted the other email without opening it, since I haven't been on ebay in ages, and that it may have asked for my CC# etc to reactivate.

I did email this to spoofs@ebay.com
