Got the Answer!!!

The Season of Lent

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theme:
Retreating Into the Wilderness with Jesus
Dates:
Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday. We skip Sundays when we count the forty days, because Sundays commemorate the Resurrection. Lent begins on 1 March 2006 and ends on 15 April 2006, which is the day before Easter.
In the Roman Catholic Church, Lent officially ends at sundown on 13 April (Holy Thursday), with the beginning of the mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Colors:
In most churches, the decorations are purple, the royal color, to prepare for the King. You can read more about color in worship
The East:
In Orthodox churches, this season is called the Great Lent. It begins on Clean Monday.
Special Days:
Ash Wednesday, 1 March 2006
The Annunciation, 25 March 2006

A few years ago, I asked a friend of mine who is a pretty devout Catholic about it being more than 40 days, As I remember it had something to do with not counting Sundays as part of the 40 days.

Strangely, most Catholics that I know (Me included) don't know that fact.

Thanks for the education, Tom :D

OMG!
All these years I have waited until Easter morning to go back to my evil ways??
I do know the part about lent not "counting" on Sundays...but my grandmother told me about that when I was little and I just thought she she made it up to give me a way to have the ice cream I gave up for lent!
(12 years of catholic school, you'd think I'd know better!)

I am not Catholic, but do work at a Catholic school, so when this came up a few weeks ago, I ask at school about when Lent ended.
EVERYONE TOLD ME EASTER SUNDAY!
No one knew the correct answer----a school full of Catholic religion teachers. :o

But at Mass yesterday, the Father told everyone Lent was over today and confused the heck out of the kids.

Lent is over because today is the day that Christ dies. We mourn his death for three nights (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) and Sunday (Easter) is when Christians celebrate that Jesus rose from the dead, thus, "on the third day he rose again...".

The thing I don't get, though, is if Lent was over yesterday, how come people still don't eat meat on Good Friday?

Because Good Friday is a day of fasting.
