It seems quite a few kids do the 'on meds' 'off meds' thing. My nephew has a MAJOR problem with ADHD (with lots of the 'hyper').....his mother (my SIL) refused to medicate him (not sure she's changed her mind, she hasn't returned her brother's calls for two years)...anyway.....when I would take him places the first thing I did once out of her sight was give him a Coke. (She didn't let him have caffeine!)

It was the reason why I was the only family member who was willing to include him on trips....didn't 'cure' it...but at least he could focus enough to listen. He's a good kid....but it was always covered up by the ADHD.

There are studies that show caffeine may help even the non-ADHDs focus somewhat better.

But then there are those gastrointestinal issues...since I had an ulcer several years back, I've avoided caffeine (except for chocolate :) ). In addition to your list ejr, my doctor also said smoking was bad for GERD/ulcer patients.

These days I'll do a Diet Coke once in a great while if I get tired while driving, am trying to stay awake with jet lag, etc. And, caffeine has always messed with my sleep. A cup of coffee would keep me up for at least 6 hours and a Diet Coke for a good 4-6 hours. And when I found out Bailey's has caffeine...that was a "duh" moment.

For a longtime, when I lived in Germany, my drink of choice was Jack Daniels, good strong coffee and Bailey's. Oh man.....wide awake and focused drunk! LOL...the trouble I found myself in! :wench: That is one time in my life I certainly won't be looking back and saying I regret the things I didn't do!

Now I'm perplexed... my sister swears I have ADD, and I've always known I've had a short attention span. Since I stopped drinking caffeine, my memory and concentration are toast, and I'm dingy at best! I thought it was the meds I started taking at the same time I quit the caffeine, numbing me a la "One Flew Over the Coocoo's Nest"... but maybe there's more to it. :-?

If you are on other meds.....maybe ask your doctor? I was informally diagnosed by my doc when being treated for another issue. I guess I could go get a formal diagnosis and testing....but...it seems a moot point.

Some anti-depressants, such as Wellbutrin, can also help.

I've been on paxil for almost 3 months... feel pretty lifeless 90% of the time. I probably should talk to my doc, but I had a tough beginning of '06, and had 4 different dr appointments some days, and basically, I'm sick of doctors.

I took Paxil for several months. I slept 22 hours a day. It just didn't work for me. Now my boss, she thinks it's great and doesn't have that problem.

I understand about being sick of doctors (I HATE them to be honest...not as people...but the whole a[ppointment thing).....but go back and talk to them. Paxil does effect some people like that.

Caffeine is really bad for you ...

Here are some of the well known side effects

nausea
diahrrea
Anxiety
Depression
Headache
Heart palpitations

(there are more) .....

I have caffeine free diet coke 8)
But coke is bad for you also. Not just the caffeine. Cops use coke to clean blood of the streets. Try coke to rid the corrision off of battery posts.

Bottled water is good for you. If you need tea try decaffeinated green tea with splenda. I feel the best I have have felt in years. I have been off coffee and regular black tea for over a year now and I dranked four or five tall cups of coffee each day (the strong StarBucks) and then two or three glasses of tea in the evening.
I have no need for tea ... I rarely drink hot drinks - I only drink because I am thirsty - so a cold drink does the trick.

Since I have been off the caffeine - I feel much better!!! (and I have never had a cup of coffee in my life .. or a lot of tea - coke was the issue) .

I suffered most of those side effects and as soon as I drink caffeine, the nausea sets in straight away :-?

If one serving equals 12 oz....about 3 cups of coffee in the AM
A diet coke at lunch
Another cup of coffee around 2PM
If I don't have to get up early in the morning sometimes iced tea in the evening...but if work is on the agenda next day....
no more after the PM coffee break or I can't sleep!!

P.S.....why hasn't Connie posted here yet???

I went with 5--6, cause that's probably most days, but there's definitely a TON of days where it's 7+. All diet pepsi, all the time. (well, usually an iced tea a day too)

It's 8:15 AM here, I've been up for about an hour and a half, and already had six cups of coffee.

I have to work from 6 PM this evening until 6 AM tomorrow morning.
I'm thinking a five pound can of coffee SHOULD last me through the night.

Yeah, I know, JoAnn.
I'll try to get by with just 3 or 4 cups of coffee at work tonight, okay? :D

caffeinated beverages

Post by rogue »

I wish I could drink stuff with caffeine!!! It has a weird side effect on me. When I want to sleep it will keep me up an extra two or three hours; without really giving me any extra energy. Then the next day or so I am so tired I can barely get out of bed. It sucks because a lot of fast food places are now carrying Sprite or water as the only noncaffeine drinks. Even the rootbeer has caffeine. So I feel for you.
