Can your friend set up some sort of calming rituals before bed? Glass of warm milk, gentle talk and a back rub sort of thing might calm her down to let her mind 'shut off' during the night.

Poor kiddo...that doesn't sound like any fun.

Maybe she's a strong willed keet, but a 5-6 year old can't get a mattress back to the top bunk by herself. Take the mattress down and put it on the lower bunk or floor. (She won't go up there and sleep on slats or springs.)

Never heard of night terrors. That's a new one on me. Sounds like nightmares to me.
Heck I still have them.
A few weeks ago I woke up sweating when I got stabbed in the stomach by Jason Vorhees.
Couldn't sleep the rest of the night.

No, they are different. The big difference that you mention is that you remember the nightmare. (I've had few that still send shivers down my spine. Warren Zevon (of all people) starred in that one!)

Anyway.....someone with a night terror will not remember anything about it. Doing it, what is was about....nothing.

Caitlin had them, bad.....and sleepwalking. I would hear her screaming and have to go find her.....under her bed, in her closet, under the dining room table.....the doc told us just to calmly take her back to bed and sit with her until she went back to sleep.....I remember one night she was under the dining room table just sobbing because she couldn't find "her letter". Have no idea then or now what "letter" she was talking about.....
She outgrew by about seven or eight....she's still a chatterbox at night though....

I wonder if talking in their sleep is something common for those that have night terrors. Rock has always talked in her sleep. If she's fallen asleep on the couch late at night when we are watching movies, it's a riot to hold converstions with her. (Yeah, I am evil.....sometimes I tape them. )

Wow, can't beleive that I've never heard of them until now.
My keet has nightmares every now and then but that's about it.
