Chesney tailgate vs. Buffett tailgate..

Post by PHnSC »

I just got back in from seeing Kenny Chesney in concert in Columbia. We got down there around noon today to do some tailgating. I thought it would be fun to see how much a difference it was from tailgating with my fellow Parrotheads. All through the day I heard from people was how Chesney tailgates were the best.

Well let me tell ya, although I did have a great time, it was nothing compared to Buffett. There were tents and blown up palm trees, but I saw no creativity at all. Plus it just seemed like a really low key affair. When you walk around during Buffett, people are so nice and just enjoying themselves, cars decorated, and of course we all have worn our bright shirts and hats. But for Chesney it was kind like, they had their beer, some food, and talking about everything but the show or the music. Best part was hearing more Jimmy playing on stereos than I heard Chesney. Overall, a good time and a very good show, but does not come close to us Parrotheads!!!

Thanks for the update. I was curious if it came close to Buffett. Obviously, it's got a ways to go.

I saw Chesney in Ft. Lauderdale....didn't do the tailgate, but it was a really good show. Uncle Kracker came out and sang the duet 'When The Sun Goes Down', and 3 other songs. It was a great surprise. As far as the Kenny crowd vs. the Parrotheads...they were loud, shouted out the lyrics, but you could count the number of beach balls being bounced the around the venue on one hand. They were not as colorful....no costumes, but the urban cowgirls....

Have to agree with you about the urban cowgirls :D I mean WOW. Uncle Kracker showed tonight to. Dont get me wrong, I had a great time at the show, lots of energy. The tailgate was just no where near what I am use to with Parrotheads. They did play Boat Drinks, before Kenny came on

In Ft. Lauderdale he came on at 9:15 and played until a little after eleven. I think he played a little longer than he normally plays because of the guest appearance. If Uncle Kracker hadn't been there the show probably would have been over closer to 10:30. Of course this is all speculation on my part since that was the only time I have seen him. Maybe he would have gone till 11 playing his own stuff. Of course he can't beat Buffett in playing time.

Saw Kenny Chesney here on Friday night, show was high energy and a fun time, but tailgating still pales in comparison, could be because most of the fan base is not of legal drinking age 8)
He is 'borrowing' many ideas from JB's shows, and I kind of like them, I can never get tired of island scenes, and when KC played Mac's 'Back where I come from' he added pics of local landmarks, like when JB used to do Mac's 'In the City'.

mason
He played a little over 2 hours with no break, about 20 or so songs.

Pablo
This was only the 3rd time we've seen him, but I am told it was the 13th year in a row KC has played Jax, only about the 8th time in a big sold out venue from what i've been told. So he's been, and will probably be, around for a bit.

Ripoff of JB? Sure is looking that way, but it's working for him. We had fun with our entertainment dollars ($67.50 each face, 4 rows from the stage on the side), and that was the bottom line for us.

Now if we get ole Bubba here in the fall for less then double that cost, all will be well in the world for us.

Yeah, he may fade, but doesn't everyone. Kenny sure looks really really GOOD in those tight jeans and tees, so I def was not looking at any Urban Cowgals. I still think his his hat is to big, but then I wan't really looking at his hat either. :wench:  :wench:

I have a feeling KC will be around for ALONG time... Especially if Bubba retires in the next few years all of the younger following who only go to Buffett show's for the tailgating will jump over to the KC for the fun of summer...

Ok.....If Chesney opens up his own chain of bars (When The Sun Goes Down Bar and Grill), gets his own brand of Rum/tequilia (The Good Stuff), maybe his own brand of beer in a keg (Keg in the Closet), and sell his own brand key lime pie ( My Key Lime Pie)....he might have some staying power. In other words he will have to market himself to keep his name in the spotlight if the radio stops playing him. Just like Buffett. Buffett couldn't get his music played on the radio enough so he marketed himself. If Buffett never opened up a Margaritaville, started his own brand of Tequlia, etc.... do you believe he would be as successful today as he is now? Don't get me wrong...I love Jimmy's music and everything that goes with it. Hell...His music made me quit my job and move to a beach town. I love it. But as far as Buffett's staying power? He made sure he had it by excellent marketing.
Sorry 'bout the long post.

My wife loves Kenny Chesney.......I've been to two of his concerts and had a great time. I think he'll be around for a long while......because his songs touch many people in much the same way JB's do and the guy can sing (something JB isn't really known for).

There is only one parrothead experience and that is Jimmy.

Kenny's concerts are fun, but they need plenty of practice, and that practice is fun. Many of the venues that Kenny plays do not lend themselves to tailgating.

I went to the St. Paul show here in Minnesota, and Kenny put on a great show, but there were no songs from the be as you are cd. Safe to say I was disappointed, but I still had a good time......still no where near the Buffett Experience..........can't wait for ALPINE!!!!

Uncle Kracker...

Post by Ragtop Dawg »

Uncle Kracker is at every single show that KC plays. It is not some sort of special appearance. I mean, for God's sakes, he has showed up at every single KC show I have attended (6), including at the 40 Watt club in Athens this year with 400 people in the crowd for the intimate Keg in the Closet tour. Personally, I wish he would tell Uncle Kracker to hit the road because he flat out sucks,in my opinion. The only way he got a record deal to start with was because he was in Kid Rock's band. Now all he does is ride around with Chesney and sing his Doby Gray cover every night. Lame.

And yes, all that said, none of it will ever top the entire Parrothead experience.

You don't have to like country to like JB. I dislike country.....I just don't want to listen to it for my own personal reasons of taste (to try and refrain from instulting any folks that do like it).....and I don't get KC at all.

The receptionist at work always has a country radio station on at her desk. She likes KC. She hates JB....including the country style songs he does.

The two, while maybe overlapping in places....are just not the same.
