Re: Tom Petty/ Pearl Jam Shows Canceled
The title of this post indicates that the entire show is canceled, but in the articles, it seems that only the tickets were canceled for the scalpers.Jahfin wrote:Score one for the good guys on this one....

I disagree with you. I don't like scalpers, and I don't use ticket brokers very often. If I do use a ticket broker and they sell me a product (ticket), I expect they will be good tickets. Actual Ticket brokers, who actually have a company (registered, incorporated or otherwise), though we don't like their business, are bound by laws. I'm more worried about the guy standing out in the parking lot with a stack of tickets, there is no accountability.Jahfin wrote:No way in hell. I hope they get their money back...
Just because someone buys a ticket from a broker, as opposed to from Ticketmaster, that doesn't mean they should be screwed out of their money.
The problem here isn't the people buying the tickets. If someone offers a product, there will always be someone willing to purchase. You can't control that part, even with an email saying "don't use a ticket broker, and they will go away". The problem is much deeper, as we all know.
The hardworking Joe Schmo just found out about the tickets, he calls Ticketmaster, who says "Sorry Sold Out". He calls a ticket broker, buys the ticket, ticket gets canceled. Broker should be liable for giving the money back to the poor hardworking guy who just wants to go see a show.
Petty canceling the tickets does not hurt the broker, who probably has already made his money off the tickets, it hurts the hardworking fan who was just trying to get a ticket.
Brokers should be shot. In this instance, the broker joined the fan club and got tickets under a false pretense. Instead of canceling the tickets, they should have just placed stricter controls in place at the next show.
From the article:
"We don't claim to have completely eliminated all reselling activity on these or any other shows," manager Tony Dimitriades said in a statement on Petty's website. "But this is definitely a step in the right direction and a major strike on behalf of the good guys."
Given the circumstances I'm not exactly sure what else they could have done especially considering most acts don't even go to the lengths Petty did to be sure the tickets ended up in the hands of actual members of his fanclub.
