Living in Colorado

I have a son who runs distance in college. He and several team mates want to spend the summer, next year, doing altitude training in Colorado, I believe based at Denver. They claim that alot of runners spend summers there for training and there are apartments available for just the summer.
Any info about this area? They will be hoping to get summer jobs for spending money. Is this difficult to do? I guess they will be setting this up far in advance and he's hoping to earn money for this venture over this summer.

Ohhhhh OCG!!!!!! How exciting!!!!

There's a few of us Denver folks around. I've lived here all but 10 months of my life.

If Denver is where they will be coming (which is what I recommend unless they would be training further up in the mountains), there's plenty of apartments and plenty of summer jobs! It all just depends on what they are looking for.

I'm more than happy to help them figure out where they would want to be.

Red Rocks Park is an AWESOME place for runners to train as is the abundance of foothills to the west of the city. Denver has a decent enough nightlife (or so I've heard; I haven't been a party girl in about 10 years) and all sorts of things to do around town.

WOOOHOOO!!!!!!

he says alot of college runner go to Colorado for the summer and train and that it's very runner friendly. I'm glad to hear the confirmation on the housing and work. Living in a shore town we have no hills. They head to north jersey a couple times a week to get some hill workouts in but it puts them at a disadvantage with runners who have better training.
Altitude is said to be part of the secret of Kenyan runners. Plus running barefoot from lions.

My keet, her best friends and two of my nieces have all settled in Boulder. All are runners. There is a very active running community, look up the Bolder Boulder for a real eye-opener. Being a "college town" the availibility of summer rentals is huge but the COL is a bit high.
Hope this helps.

Ooohhh. I didn't think of Boulder (it's where all the hippies are) but J.LeP is right, they have a very active running community. The Bolder Boulder is the spotlight of running events in Colorado and takes place Memorial Day every year. If the boys are out of school then, it would be a cool thing to kick of their summer. It's a great race!

Boulder is also very expensive. Denver can be pricey too, but not quite like Boulder, although I suspect Boulder is a good place to find a good summer rental because the college students won't be around, so it may be cheaper.

I'm trying to think if I "know people" who would help with a summer rental. The next time I talk to my SMIL I'll ask what she might know. She used to work for a company who leased temporary/corporate housing and such, so maybe she still has some contacts.

Thanks so much. Maybe it is Boulder he's thinking of. I'll have to check. Any help would be appreciated. They do have some time and probably won't need to get serious til after Christmas. But it would be good to start working up prices now. I'm guessing they're looking for a place that can be shared by 4-5 guys, not too picky. But it would have to be a place that's ok with college kids. So I guess a college town would be best for that. They could get housing vacated by students for the summer. Also, some colleges rent out dorm and school apts. for the summer to college students so I told them to look into that.

They recently renovated an old hotel for student housing near downtown Denver. I'd bet they would do that too. I'll see if I can find a Web site. It's in Denver.

A quick follow up. My daughter spent the summer between her Jr and Sr year in Boulder and has hosted runners from her school ever since. The hills, mountains and altitude do make a huge difference versus sea level training.

I need to save this or just repost as we get close enough to do serious planning. I'm glad to hear there's so much info here. He thinks the summer there will help his cross country season. He's also thinking if it's a group of runners together there will be fewer distractions for him. He works beach patrol here in the summer and spending all your time with a bumch of lifeguards it's kind of hard to stick to your training routine.

The third project, the refurbished Executive Tower Inn at 14th and Curtis streets a block away from the CU-Denver Building, is being developed under the auspices of the Auraria Foundation. The Foundation board met yesterday and approved financing for the project, according to foundation President Dean Wolf, executive vice president for administration at the Auraria Higher Education Center. Bonds to finance the project will be sold in the next week, and the deal is expected to close within the next two weeks, Wolf said.

:D :D
The refurbished Executive Tower Inn ( ETI ) facility will provide 439 beds, primarily in four-bedroom units, according to Wolf. It is expected to open on Aug. 14, 2006, he said. Rental rates are not yet available.

CU-Denver officials were unsuccessful in their bid to purchase the Executive Tower Inn in 2003 for international student housing. The deal fell through after CU's revised bid was rejected by the seller.

The ETI facility will be managed for AHEC by American Campus Communities, which also manages the private University Village at Boulder Creek and CU-Boulder's Bear Creek apartments.

Boulder is a great place, and it's not all full of hippies... I lived there for a few years, and loved it. Most of my friends were electrical engineers & IT guys.... There are martini bars next to vegetarian restaurants, one of the best Creole breakfast places outside of NO, brewpubs, and lots of local coffee shops & farmer's market on the weekends. The mountains are right there, tons of outdoor activities to do, and lots of runners & bikers training - and being at the foothills of the mountains, there is the choice of flatland running/biking, running in the mountains, street/pavement running or trails with rocks & tree stumps for fun & excitement, or a combination of it all!

Should be plenty of summer rental/sublets - most of the houses on 'The Hill' are for college students. I lived there when I first moved there in a house with 1 other girl & 4 guys.

Just have them remember to drink lots of water & don't overtrain at first - the altitude/sun/thin air will kick your a$$ faster than anything if you're not careful, especially at first!

Denver is a great city too - fun downtown, lots to do. Further from the mountains though.

I would highly recommend going to visit while he's out there! :D
