Yep, my doc here told me last fall that I was looking at about $750 per eye in Montreal. I'll seriously consider it when I have the $$$.tikitatas wrote:Lasik can be found for 1800 dollars by reputable docs.
Sounds like a plan!!tikitatas wrote:w00t! We can all meet in Montreal, have drinkies and get our eyes fixed!!!!
Wow... I haven't yet had the need, and thankfully it sounds like neither of you have either, but it's a little comforting knowing it's there.PIA wrote:ill third that...land_shark3 wrote:Same here.... fly my a$$ back to the States!scubamyk wrote:As a member of Divers Alert Network (DAN), I always have an "out" if I need serious medical treatment.
Got close to calling them last week from Cabo. Luckily a decrease in the alcohol consumption and an increase in electrolytes balanced me out.

Do you really want to "save money" on something as important as your eyes? Go for the best. If you get a deal, great. If not, at least you have less to worry about.
Plus, going back to Canukia for all the follow-up visits might be cost prohibitive.
Unfortunately, part of the reason many drugs are so much cheaper in other countries is because those governments put a cap on prices...and then the US market ends up "subsidizing" the R&D costs of the drugs for those countries. That's where the pharmaceutical part of the health care system is really broken.land_shark3 wrote:I know I brought back a pharmacy from Mexico.![]()
However, I wouldn't go outside the US to get treatment unless it was life or death and the treatment was only offered in a non-socialized country.
There is a reason US treatments and medicines cost so much; research and development. If we lowered health care costs, companies would have no incentive to spend billions of dollars researching new medical treatments and diagnosis machines. Ever wonder why Canadians often come across the boarder and pay full price for medical treatment?

Naaaaah . . . we'll just hang out in Montreal and shop until Jen's ALLLLLLLLLLL better!
Operations and medical procedures are very popular for Americans to get done in foreign countries, especially India. Hospitals there are state of the art, and some are better than in the U.S. There are many companies who will set the whole thing up for you (airfare, operation, vacation afterwards, etc). The term for this is actually called Medical Tourism. Several companies, like http://www.medretreat.com take care of it all for you, at a fraction of the price it would cost in the U.S., plus you get a nice vacation out of it. It's very interesting, I learned a lot about it this year while studying abroad. The Lost Manatee wrote:Just as an FYI, Blue Cross/Blue Shield(among other insurance companies) is actually paying for people to fly to India for some procedures and will cover airfare, the surgery and the recovery stay, which can be extended for a minimal cost. Why are they doing this? It's simple, it's cheaper and the care you receive is the same. The staff is US trained and certified, the clinic or hospital is inspected by BC and meets the same standards as the US hospital or clinic.
I have to admit that having friends to come by and cheer me up might be a bit harder in Mumbai then in the States but when big insurance companies are doing this, I have to wonder if things aren't out of whach here at home.
