Hi all, long time parrothead, first time visitor.

I come on a sad occassion. My uncle recently passed away. He was a huge parrothead going back to the 70's. He got me into Buffett among a lot of other great music. We held an annual parrothead party at his place every year and played guitars until the sky started to lighten from the sun rise. Most importantly, he was one helluva guy and will be missed.

With his eulogy, I feel there'd be nothing that he'd like more than to quote a Buffett line or two. There are some obvious lines in some songs such as That's What Living Is to Me, Changes, We Are the People, etc.

Anyway, he was a good family man. Was heavily involved in charity and had an amazing outlook on life.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey, just reading what you wrote broke my heart. I'm very sorry.

Perhaps instead of a quote, you can say how much the two of you bonded over Buffett's music. Maybe take that approach. I dunno.

That's what the daughter of our good PH friend used in her Dad's eulogy. I guess it was nearly 9 yeras ago now, and to this day, I still look up to the sky and think of him whenver I hear that line.

At my brother's service I played Lovely Cruise, that's what I want played at mine.

When my grandmother died a while back I listened to The Captain and The Kid most of the day. Neither she or I are sailors, but the story still helped me through that day.

Thanks all. The last line of Paris was the leading contender for me. Many of the other suggestions were great as well. I never really thought of the line from Survive and Lovely Cruise which are great.

I'm sorry for the passing of a great parrothead....one that truly spread the love!

I know it's a cover and not truly a "Buffett Song", but I used "Pacing the Cage" at my Mom's funeral....played the song and incorporated these lines in the eulogy, but there are several lines fromt he song that are very powerful:

"Sometimes the best map will not guide you
You cant see whats round the bend
Sometimes the road leads through dark places
Sometimes the darkness is your friend
Today these eyes scan bleached-out land
For the coming of the outbound stage
Pacing the cage"

My condolences for your loss, but I am most glad for the time you had with him.......... I can think of many but only recall a few.
The Captain and The Kid has been mentioned.....Survie has been mentioned, "Life is Just A Tire Swing" has not been mention nor has "Migration".....for dome reason "Desperation Samba" comes to mind. No insults are intended, But the whole phrase/stanza ( you can find the full words in the lyrics section, if not PM me) "How the hell I got here..............yet I'm going in..." does seem fittting to me of a man of his character and esteem.

Or perhaps words from "Bannana Republic" may be adequate.

Again my empathy and condolences for your loss. While you have lost him for now, remember what you gained from him through the years and your time together.
Would he want it any other way??

I'm sorry for your loss. Another cover by Jimmy, Defying Gravity by Jesse Winchester works for me. It brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it, I think of my Dad who passed away in 2005. The lyrics are simple but powerful. I like the Fenway version the best, because he dedicated it to the 9/11 victims, closed the show with it and my wife and I were there.

At my grandfather's wake they played a DVD on repeat with numerous photos of his life with the song "Rocky Top" playing.

The line "Some of it Magic, Some of it Tragic, but I had a good life all the way" always hits me a certain way.

Sorry to hear about your uncle. I think Defying Gravity is a great song for you to look at. Jimmy actually played it as his last song at Alpine several years ago for his Dad after he died. "Thats for my old man"
