Your Favorite Buffett Concert?
I am sitting here listening to Radio Margaritaville play my very favorite Buffett concert, his accoustic one in E Hampton in 2001...and wondering what other folk's preferences are...and why?
I know you've probably done this at least annually....but I'd love to know...
It almost goes without saying, this one is great because there is so much of the more or less natural Jimmy Buffett in it...his humor, his thoughts, his feelings. Also, because he sang so many of the great ones that he doesnt do in big concerts. Also, I guess, because of its proximity to 9/11 and how he handled that (if there is anyone out there who hasnt heard it yet, it will be on RM several more times this week, and can be downloaded from the FTP site)
So, what is yours? (I sure would like to know of any better ones!!!)

I never heard East Hampton first time around, probably because at that point I was trying to get things in order to leave for a year.....
It's a *great* show!!! Lots of old stuff, and stuff we don't get in the big shows....
My favorites:
Chicago, Sep 30, 2001.... the last show for a while....
Jones Beach, 2002, the first show 'back home'
Tampa, 2003... It's My Job.....
Waikiki, Jan 2004......
Fenway, Sep 10, 2004.... we were there when Jimmy helped break the curse
Wrigley, 2005...... City of New Orleans from the bleachers..... OMG...........
But probably the most memorable..... Maui, 2004, O...M...G...........

Its interesting that most of the responses so far identify some personal event in their lives at the time that made the concert their favorite, rather than anything about the concert itself....hmmm
Could it be that, except for the accoustic ones, the babe ruth ghost, the bleachers singing and our own reporter at the aspen show, there isnt that much to choose between the various concerts? Same or similar set lists, same performances, etc....fun, but one pretty much like the rest...
Of course, there's alot to be said for stability, predictability, the comfort of the known......
I've sat in on all the the set list threads this tour, and the things i can remember creating real enthusiasm are Jake and Here We Are...(plus the brief-lived idea of featuring of an album)

True, the shows aren't all that different from each other, but enough so to keep it interesting. And it's true that what happens at and around the show, and who you're there with, becomes as important (or more so) than the show itself. I definitely would not climb on a plane and fly to a concert in another city just to arrive for the show and sit by myself. No way. But to tailgate and party with friends from far and wide, yep, I'd be at every show, if I had the money and the free time.1 CP wrote:Its interesting that most of the responses so far identify some personal event in their lives at the time that made the concert their favorite, rather than anything about the concert itself....hmmm

And besides that, some of my favorite concerts are those I was *not* present for..... I'll never forget as long as I live being up at 3:00AM listening to the FSOTW tour on RadioMargaritaville FROM the FSOTW, talking with BNers online at the same time......

It's a close tie. The Somewhere Over China tour (with Bonnie Raitt opening) was exceptional. The Coral Reefers were just ON. And the best version of Havana Daydreamin' that I've ever heard - both nights on that tour (Pine Knob).
But I think The Outposts tour in 1991 was THE best show I've ever been to. It was just manic. Jimmy was nuts. No new record to push, nothing, just touring and having a blast, playing great songs and great performances - the dangling bottle with the request in it - Cowboy In The Jungle with something else, he did a medley, I can't recall, but I remember Cowboy. Jimmy's Jump Up Tour was the start, it seems, of him just having fun (again, no new record etc...to promote) but The Outpost took it a lot further - especially with the Margaritaville Clipper coming onstage. The Outposts Tour had a fantastic stage, the set list was, from what I can recall, exceptional. It was wild. Since then things have gotten a lot more tame and it seems there is not the same amount of intensity now as there was then in terms of still doing it. I know Jimmy's getting older etc...but from the aspect of the performance, the 1991 tour the band was on fire and so was the crowd. Not one show I've been to since then has had any kind of intensity or feeling of that show or the previous tours.

That one was good except I was on the aisle and I had A LOT of drunk people leaning all over me. I like his smaller venues better and my favorite would probably have to be Bristow, VA 2004. Great time all the way around. Even my brother-in-law's ex-girlfriend getting really drunk, opening all of my beer and then proceeding to kick them over wasn't so bad (it was after the show and we were waiting to get out of the parking lot).God's Own Drunk wrote:Citizens Bank Ballpark 08/27/05 Philadelphia (Saturday)
The day after my wedding, the kickoff to my honeymoon, and second row seats to boot. A great night.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar
