Nearly 2 years ago, I had been living in an apartment - everything was fine and dandy for several months.

One morning I woke up with what looked like some little bite on my hand. Didn't think much about it. But day after day, I got more and more red welts. This went on for nearly 5 months. I went to my GP doc and they couldn't figure it out. They sent me to a dermatologist, who took a skin sample (and I have a small scar forever on my arm). They couldn't figure it out. They sent me to an allergist, cause they thought it was hives. I was given numerous antihistimines, and nothing helped the itching and welts. Finally my son was just searching the internet, and took a stab at 'bedbugs'. Sure enough, I had seen one of these little suckers on my blankets, but I (and the allergist when I brought a sample) dismissed it as just being a little critter wanting to get out of the cold.

But it wasn't just some little critter.

I went to the apartment manager with my body covered in welts and itching and some 'sample' bugs. They didn't want to do anything. I called the city who sent someone out and gave them a citation to spray my apartment. Prior to that I had to buy these special covers for the mattress so the damn things couldn't get out.

Between the spraying and the covering, finally after several months, I was no longer being bitten every night.

However I can never fall asleep again without thinking of these damn things crawling all over me.

I share this only because I don't want anyone to go through what I did.

I had taken these pictures so I could give them to all the doctors I saw, hoping it would help them figure out what I had.

Bugs in Florida arent tiny.... a 747 will just walk right on the bed...no hiding for them!

For non Floridians a 747 is our term of endearment for our phrends the palmetto cockroach. Thats not the kind you get in other states.... unless of course they fly up north... which now that I think about it is altogether possible. Some have the wing span of a small bird!

I've seen those many times on visits to FL, Susan! No thank you. You can keep 'em. Good thing they don't bite ya!

i heard that bedbugs are common in europe and are brought over by european travelers....ive seen them they are gross....and they spread like crazy....as a small motel business the thought of them freaks us out...

I lived down here over a year before someone clarified this for me. Everyone was talking about palmetto "bugs", so I'm imagining a cute little, tropical lady bug. Should've known better.

I have been waking up lately to a bunch of bites...I live in So Cal and we usually dont have any types of bugs....I at first thought it was a mosquito in my place but have had yet to find one.....I am seriously thinking it could be this....Thanks for the info and I hope it gets better for you......

Yeah.. most come from 'overseas'.. I lived in a complex that a lot of military folks lived in..

I had a palmetto walk up to me the other day, waving it antenna and asking to borrow my car.

For reference, I told it "no" because it didn't put gas in it last time he had borrowed it. Then I stepped on the litle f****r.

Penny, how big are these things?

I've been eaten alive on my left leg (left leg only, weird, huh?) and I'm trying to eliminate possibilities.

That would explain why Quint has 0 bites at all if this is the problem.

Never had a problem until we moved into this apartment.

I'm honestly hoping that it's not this. Because isn't it hard as hell to get rid of the damn things?

As I told PS.. check your mattress and box spring.. they do make big cases you can cover them with, and they can't get through. Same as those who are bothered by dust mites. And it took two sprayings by a professional, and it did get rid of 'em. But I always felt like they were there.
