GLENDALE, Calif. - Teen actor Haley Joel Osment, who suffered a broken rib last month when his car struck a mailbox, faces up to six months in jail on charges that he was driving drunk and possessing marijuana, authorities said.

Osment's blood-alcohol level after the July 20 crash was measured at .16 percent, twice the legal limit, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

The 18-year-old actor was charged Thursday with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, marijuana possession and driving under the influence with the special allegation of having a blood-alcohol content of .15 percent or higher. He also faces a vehicle code infraction of being under the age of 21 and driving with a blood-alcohol level of .05 percent or greater.

somehow a few of these seem a bit gratuitous... just nail him for an OMVI, minor in possession, and the marijuana and call it good. sheesh.

He won't go to jail, he's famous. Anyone of us did that, off to the pokey for 6 months.

probably not. Think, "Robert Downey, Jr."; he's still working with about 1/2 of the exported product of Columbia, 1997 floating thru his system. :D

what, until next time when he kills some innocent person because all he got was a slap on the wrist the first time? uh-uh.... give him something to think about.... get his attention.....

OMVI (DUI, DWI) is not a light hit in any book, minor in possession and the marijuana charge is probably the lightest charges. The other two (the administrative law one on his license) and the 2x legal limit are just a way for the prosecutor to look "tough on crime".

someone who is driving with TWICE THE LEGAL LIMIT of alcohol in his system DESERVES to get the book thrown at him before he kills someone. It's not SUPPOSED to be a light hit.

I hear what you are saying. I am not saying that he shouldn't be punished. I am saying that the extras beyond DUI/OMVI penalties are gratuitous. If it weren't a serious situation, I would be saying that none of it really matters. He was injured, he loses his license (perhaps not serious if you are Hollywood star in that he can probably make arrangements for a car service during the period his license is suspended as part of the DUI charges rather than the average guy on the street). It isn't exactly like he got off with a slap on the wrist.

Makes me think Vince Neil killing his friend in an automobile accident, where they were speeding, drinking and doing cocaine and ONLY having to pay a 1 million dollar fine and some community service.

Let that happen to us, we'd be in jail for 5 - 10 years.

and in that case, you are right too:

DUI, possession of a controlled substance (the cocaine), speeding/reckless driving, and vehicular homicide are all applicable, and valid. Adding a "failure to use a turnsignal" to the list would be just a stupid thing to charge him with. and yes, he should have been doing the 5-10 for the vehicular homicide rather than fines and community service because it doesn't make the same impact to give someone a fine when they make more money than God. Put a rock star behind bars away from the groupies, drugs, and travel; you put a serious crimp in their style and drive home the message their actions have consequences.

Robert Downey, Jr is a good actor, that's why he was able to find work.
