Amazing Sporting Events You've Attended
The "things you have ...." thread got me thinking. What amazing sports events have you attended? Has anyone here seen a world record broken? Seen Mohammad Ali box? Anything else fantastic or once-in-a-lifetime?
e.g.
I was able to attend Cal Ripken's record breaking game 2131. We had great lower box seats right near the Orioles' dugout, so when Rafeal Palmeiro pushed Cal out to do his famous "lap around Camden Yards" we were right there. I still get goosebumps when I recall the 20 minute standing ovation and the music playing when they lowered the banner on the warehouse to reveal the number 2131.
others:
LIPH saw unassisted triple play by Randy Velarde at Yankee Stadium.
jackiesic had 3rd row center court seats for the Basketball Game of the Century - Univ of KY and Duke (you know the one with the famous Christian Latner shot).

I couldn't get tickets to that game (last minute business trip to Washington DC), so I went and sat in a bar in Annapolis, the same town I was in when his streak started.surfpirate wrote:The "things you have ...." thread got me thinking. I was seated in left field last year for David Wright's amazing leaping barehand grab of a Padres blooper
Many considered it the Best 2005 MLB Defensive Play of the year...
Also Padres v. Mets about this time last year
Mike Cameron smashed into Carlos Beltran face-to-face while both dived for a sinking liner.
I was seated close by in right center, and it was the most horrific collision I'd ever seen, and heard, on the diamond.

i caught all 20 innings and our pitcher, pitched all 20 innings....we lost by one run in the bottom of the 20th...
the game took about 4 1/2 hours....
i couldnt walk the next day...

I've been to the Masters a few times for some great Sunday play. Saw some older players in their prime. Saw some of the new ones getting better (e.g. Tiger playing as an amateur).

Nothing comes to mind regarding any Pro Sporting events. I've been to Bears, Bulls, Cubs, Black Hawk, Rockies, Broncos, Avalanche, Nuggets, Crush games. LOVED 'em all and many special memories.
But I did see the IL state wrestling championship from 75, 76, & 77 where King Mueller, Fred Ferrin, and Mike Abney wrestled. King Mueller went on to Iowa State and wrestled for Dan Gable, who was an Olympic champion.

Yep. I remember seeing that one replayed over and over on TV. It was ugly.Lightning Bolt wrote: Also Padres v. Mets about this time last year

I just saw on ESPN that tonight there was a pretty hard collision at the Phillies/Cubs game. Chase Utley accidentally delivered a hard hit on teammate Aaron Rowand. Rowand was down for a few minutes before leaving with the help of two teammates. He was taken to a hospital for precautionary X-rays.

I saw Fernando Valenzuela's no no against St. Louis at Dodger Stadium
I saw Wayne Gretzky beat Felix Potvan (sp) top shelf in OT to advance the LA Kings into the next round of the Stanley Cup Finals. I thought my voice was dammaged for life.
I saw Magic Johnson break the all time assist record. It didn't last long.
I saw Magic Johnson's supposed to be last game the day before he announced he was HIV positive.
I saw about 15 fights and three stabbings at a LA Raiders game when they played the Bronco's, and later found out that was "normal"

I was at all 3 games of the 2004 Final Four in San Antonio. On Saturday, Ga Tech beat Oklahoma State, and UConn beat Duke. Both of those games were decided on the very last shot. The tension and the excitement in the building during both of those games was unreal.
On Monday night, UConn beat Ga Tech pretty good, but Ga Tech made a great comeback in the final minutes. Had there been another two or three minutes later, they may have rallied. Even though I had no connection to any team, the sheer excitement for UConn after the game was really cool to see.

I was at "The Kirby Pucket Game" game 6 of the 1991 World Series, when Kirby (RIP) went up over the left field wall to rob the Braves of a home run and then hit the game winning home run.
I was at Kenny Holzmans and Burt Hootens no hitters
Larry Bird and Indiana State suffered their second of only three loses at the hands of my Illinois State University Redbirds in Horten Fieldhouse, Normal, Il. That was pretty special.

If I had to catch 20 innings I would probably be bedridden for a week.PIA wrote:my junior year of high school i participated in the longest recorded fast pitch softball game in the state of PA....we played a 20 inning game for the District 10 Championship....

I was in Dublin, Ireland during their rugby championships, and County Kerry won. This was not really something I was paying attention to, until I was in Co. Kerry later that week and saw a gathering on the street in town. It was the players from the team having a local celebration on a stage with a crowd of locals - I was standing next to a family with a few boys who were around 8-10yrs old and couldn't see the stage. So, my friend and I lifted them up (the parents were holding the younger children already) so they could see, and they told us all about their favorite players, and all the great plays that happened during the game as only the excitement of a young fan can retell these moments. This was one of the highlights of my trip!
Otherwise, I used to play water polo with a few women who later went on to be part of the first Women's water polo Olympic team, playing in the Sydney Olympics.

Went to the 2001 Final Four championship game at the Metrodome, Arizona vs Duke. I was a senior in high school and a buddy and I skipped out of school and drove 2 hours to get the Dome and bought tickets from a scalper that were 15 rows up behind the Arizona bench.
One of the best spur of the moment decisions I have ever made!
