Katrina, a year later.

Post by irishcajunphan »

Just wanted to share my blog from today. My hometown, family, and friends are still recovering from Katrina, but all we hear about is New Orleans.

REMEMBER THE REST

On this the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I encourage you to remember the rest of those hit by the killer storm.

BILOXI. GULFPORT. PASCAGOULA. MOSS POINT. ESCATAWPA. PASS CHRISTIAN. LONGBEACH. HATTISBURG. KILN. and too many other towns and cities in Mississippi to list.

As well as, GRAND BAY, BAYOU LA BATRE, CODEN, DAUPHIN ISLAND, and MOBILE and surrounding areas. My hometown and stomping grounds were changed forever. We got a courtesy mention on the news.

New Orleans wasn't the only place hit. Countless other places along the Gulf Coast suffered loss, damage, and being erased from the map. New Orleans just got all the press due to their whining. The levees broke after the storm. The city failed to use the money sent to them for the maintanance of the levees. Instead, it was funneled into casinoes and other things. The towns in Mississippi and Alabama were damaged by Katrina and its storm surge.

PLEASE REMEMBER THE REST who suffered through and are recovering from the devastating storm.

...and Jimmy there's still so much to be done.

I'm sure as with most disasters, while there may have been an initial surge of relief, right now they really need it. :-?

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

So much help is needed along the Mississippi and Alabama coasts! New Orleans is the squeaky wheel that gets the oil. The rest of the towns are just going about doing the best they can with what they've got and any help they can get.

Of the 2300 residents of Bayou La Batre, Alabama, 2000 were left homeless. Here are a few pictures of the damage.

Last one and I'll shut up. This is an article about a hometown hero, Dr. Benjamin. She was also featured in Reader's Digest after the storm.

Good point irishcajon. I think NO gets so much press because of the negative things that came out of the disaster there and the political spindoctoring on both sides.

On the positive note, I heard lots of positive stories coming out of the areas you mentioned. Anyway, you're not forgotten.

My in-laws live in Bay St. Louis, MS three miles from the Gulf. They just got back into their home in the last month. They had about 8 feet of storm surge go through their place.

Don't you find it strange how Key West got the same hurricane, had more water in the Keys at a higher level than in 50+ years, yet they didn't whine, ask for handouts and are rebuilt?

New Orleans was the squeeky wheel DEMANDING for help. The rest of the coast that was destroyed accepted it and dealt with it. They are rebuilding in a quiet dignified way. That is why I don't want them to be forgotten. New Orleans is still squeeking and demanding and blaming. Some in the city are striving to rebuild while others are still waiting for someone else to do it for them. I'm sorry if I get a little tired of hearing about them, but I have more respect for the others along the coast who have accepted their circumstances and started over without all of the hullabalo.

I'm not ready to right off a whole city just because a of a few bad apples.
The simple fact is that New Orleans is world famous and that's why it's in the news more.....oh yeah....and their mayor is a walking soundbyte of idiocy.

A year ago, one large American city was OVERLOOKED for a few days longer than it took to reach the tsunami victims half a world away just months earlier... :-?

No question of that.

Today is today, and progress still involves a lot of patience and perseverance from all.
