20 years of Smurf Turf in Boise

BOISE, Idaho -- Twenty years after the Smurf Turf made its debut, Boise State's blue football field remains an eye-catcher.

And that's exactly what Gene Bleymaier hoped for when he came up with the idea of blue turf at Bronco Stadium.

''I guess that I'm the type of person that when I paint my house I paint it a different color so the neighbors notice you did something,'' said Bleymaier, in his 24th year as Boise State's athletic director.

Bleymaier was the driving force behind the NCAA's only non-green field, which made its debut 20 years ago Wednesday in Boise State's 74-0 rout of Humboldt State.

''This is our house,'' linebacker Korey Hall said. ''It is a kind of statement that is kind of cool, and there's nothing else like it.''

Having a pretty good football team helps the appeal, too. The Broncos have gone 110-30 on the blue turf, 40-2 since 2000.

Once upon a time, wasn't BSU's colors yellow and white? One of my HS buddies LOVED to wear a BSU shirt to school he stole from a gym I used to work at. Where can you find a university that's PROUD to announce they are ALL ABOUT BS!
