Superstitions: What do YOU do to help your team?

Post by surfpirate »

We all know it's never just the players and coaches that win or lose the games. WE THE FANS are responsible for our teams' performance out there on the field, ice, court or diamond.

What silly/stupid/ridiculous ritual do YOU do to help your team win? When they lost, didn't you feel that somehow it was a little your fault because YOU forgot to do or wear ......... something? C'mon ... we all do it.

So spill it people. Why are YOU responsible for your team's winning or losing?

For example I have to wear my #44 John Riggins jersey whenever I watch my Redskins play. Normal enough I suppose, but I also prop up one of those 4 inch tall crazy haired "troll" dolls (wearing burgandy and gold) on the couch in front of the TV. This past Monday I went to the game and forgot to tell my wife and kids to "be sure to put the troll out for the game". Sure enough, my 'Skins lost to the Vikings. My fault.

In another thread Auntie said:
I didn't wear my 'Skins ball cap Monday night, so I'm SURE that's why they lost. Last season, they won the games toward the end of the season that I wore it facing forward in the first half, and turned it around backward during the second half.
What about the rest of you?

I wear the same thing .... to home games and when I watch on tv ....

I need to rethink ... we got flogged 50 - 6 last night in the playoffs and are out of the comp now for 2006

I also ALWAYS BOO the opposition team when they run on the field ....

I also ALWAYS abuse the referee [smilie=battingeyes.gif]

I also ALWAYS sing the words to the national anthem

and I ALWAYS do our NEW-CASTLE chant 8)

None helped ... we are gone

When I played I got dressed to The Who and on the last note of Won't Get Fooled Again, I slammed a ball into my glove and went to work

When I used to play, I would wear the same pants and shirt the day of the game (if I wore that combo when we won). When watching it depends.....

Back in 2003, whenever I didn't wear my Trot Nixon jersey, the Red Sox lost (I couldn't wear it for Game 7 of the ALCS because the place I went to wouldn't allow people to wear team jerseys to the place) and we all know what happened. AND it had to be when I had the chance at watching them too, like when the Sox were on ESPN, FOX or playing the Orioles (I was in DC at the time).

With the Redskins, it depends on when they are on. I always have to have two or three beers (same type too).
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Life is short, live long!!

I'd rather be a wiseass than a dumbass.

It's out of control up here right now- One radio station rubs a dead fish for bad mojo for the Twins, and a box of Gordon's Lemon Pepper filets for luck for the Tigers (but hey, it's workin!).

No superstition for the Loins, they stink and there's nothing the fans can do (I'm from Indy, I'm maintaining my hometown loyalty, but I really don't like to watch games on TV unless I'm in a bar full of diehard fans).

Gee, I just figured EVERYONE did that!
In a "previous life" when I showed horses competively, I had a pair of lucky socks. I started wearing them b/c they were thin and fit under my boots better, but I always placed higher when I wore them. They quickly became my "official show day" socks. Of course, they couldn't just be "plain." They happened to be red and navy blue stripes, so they were rather noticeable when I was between classes wearing tennis shoes w/ my breeches. But the POINT is that I was winning! And it was because of the socks, of course!!

As a participant, they are not superstitions ;) they are preparations. :D ... and I was prepared.

As a lifelong fan of the Cardinals and Bears, I've never had a lot of superstitions.

... when I moved to Denver, I received a stein with a Broncos logo. I am required to drink beer from this stein when the Broncos are playing.

I usually DO NOT wear any Bronco gear when I'm at home. But I do when I go out to watch it somewhere. :)

And they always seem to score when my sister goes to the bathroom. Or when E is drinking out of his Bronco mug that Phaw got him. :D

as soon as we get to penn state we drive by the stadium..."There is the Holy Land!"

at the end of basketball practice i always made my last 2 shots before i left the gym....

i always wore blue spandex at home games and white away...

i always gave my warmups to my mom before every game and if they werent there my grandparents...

the same went for shirts underneath my jerseys...i wore the same white one at home and the same blue away and for softball i had a tie die one i wore for every game.

before big games id eat buttered noodles and peaches at my grammas house...

there are sooo many things...

During Yankees/Red Sox games that I watch:
If the Yankees are winning or losing by 3 or less in the 7th inning or later, I have to pace back and forth across the room when the Yankees are pitching, stopping to actually watch the pitch. When they are hitting I have to find "The Seat." It's always different, I just have to find it.

As for playing sports, before playing tennis, I always sing the first couple verses of Jolly Mon. I started that one losing a match in the second set, about to lose the entire match, mumbled the first verse to myself, and ended up coming back. Baseball, I always have to step out of the box after every pitch and touch the plate 3 times.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar
