peaceoneday
If you don't know the story of Peace One Day, you need to check it out at the website peaceoneday.org. It's pretty amazing. Basically, a young British man - failed actor - started making small films of his own. He wanted to change the world. In 1999 he had this idea that we could get the world started on the path of peace with one peaceful day - one day of cessation of hostilities and violence; one day of ceasefires, of truce - every year. He launched the film project Peace One Day in Sept. of that year. He decided to document his efforts figuring that he would end up failing and have a film that showed the world's unwillingness to change or end up succeeding... but that was pretty much inconceivable (he said). He began to try to schedule meetings with the interested and influential - including, eventually, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, and the Dalai Lama. In September of 2001 (the month of 9/11), the primary objective was achieved when the delegations to the UN from the UK and Costa Rica introduced a General Assembly resolution - which was adopted unanimously by UN member states - establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on September 21st, the UN International Day of Peace - "Peace Day". As the peaceoneday.org website says, "The vision of the Day extends far beyond the cessation of violent conflict and represents an opportunity for individuals to join in a moment of global unity."

Imagine what the world could accomplish if we all worked together, instead of scratching and fighting each other.
A pipe dream, maybe, but a nice one.
Nice site. I hadn't heard of this effort before. Thanks for posting this, backbeat.
