Sail On, Byron Nelson....

Post by SchoolGirlHeart »

One of the greatest golfers ever has passed on..... :(

Byron Nelson, 1912-2006. Sail on, sir....

"I don't know very much," Nelson said in a 1997 interview with The Associated Press. "I know a little bit about golf. I know how to make a stew. And I know how to be a decent man."

My family made his tournament in Fort Worth an annual outing. He was, truly, a Southern Gentleman. The word that comes to mind is gracious.

Sail on, Mr. Nelson.
Gentilly ... 42 years is a long time to wait .... a Northeast Texas woman can hope.

I was lucky enough to see him tee off a few times at Augusta.

Hope he enjoys the 19th hole more than all the other 18 behind him.

Sail on Lord Byron...
IMHO, he may have been one of the greatest golfers of all time had he played another ten years.
In 1945 he won 11 tournaments in a row (Tiger has only won 6 in a row, the most since Nelson won 11). He also won 4 major championships, all before the age of 34 when he retired from the regular circuit.

Also, he played at the same time as another great, Ben Hogan, as they were only born 6 months apart. Nelson won all of his majors before the age of 34 while Hogan won all of his after Nelson retired.

Another interesting note is that his swing was so smooth, it has been replicated and used as a model by the pros, even today.

You will be missed.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

So smooth that the USGA has a machine/robot called "Iron Byron" that it uses to test golf clubs and golf balls for conformity to standards; it was named after Byron Nelson, because his swing was so consistent and perfect that legend has it that only a mechanical man could replicate it.

Sail on Byron ... one of the greatest!!
