Bought TTWWY Last Night!!

Post by PieceOfWork »

First post: YEEEAAAAHHH!!!!

I was lucky enough to stumble on a retailer here in Tampa who mistakenly put it out early. I won't mention any names but it rhymes with "West Guy".

Anyway, let me preface this by saying I've been a Buffett fan for 20 years and have all of his albums. Please don't flog me but I'm a little mixed on this one. I've been enjoying this one for the last 24 hours and while there are some really good songs on it, it's very much a let down after the incredible Far Side Of The World and License To Chill – it's probably my least favorite since Hot Water.

The album as a whole is really inconsistent. I've read people complaining on here that it's a country album and that couldn't be farther from the truth. While Bama Breeze is country, it's really the only one on the disc. The liner notes describe this as an album Jimmy's been putting together hear and there for the last couple of years and it sounds like it. Nothing really "gels".

TTWWY starts off with three songs that are completely different from each other: Bama Breeze is pure country but too slow; "Party at the end of the World" sounds like it belongs on FSOTW and "Take the Weather" has Jimmy's vocals so badly burried in the background that you can hardly hear him – besides the point that it's produced just like the CH version and doesn't sound like JB at all.
The album is the best in the middle starting with "Whoop De Doo" and ending with "Reggabilly Hill". Elvis Presley Blues is pure poop (even though I'm generally a fan of Gillian Welch) and doesn't sound right with a guy singing it. The next few songs are pretty forgettable until you get to "Breathe In" and "Duke's On Sunday" which are both phenomenal.

Over all, kinda dissapointing. But hell, a fair Buffett album is still better than almost everything else out there!

...Just my thoughts. I'll be excited to hear what everyone else thinks come Tuesday!

Well, if it's not all country and there is a variety of songs....it's gonna be worth it....(I am one of those afraid it's going to be too country. When my co-workers who up until this point have made good natured fun of my being a parrothead all of sudden discover him...I have to worry)....but as you say, "But hell, a fair Buffett album is still better than almost everything else out there!"
Well I’m a tidal pool explorer
From the days of my misspent youth
I believe that down on the beach
Where the seagulls preach
Is where the Chinese buried the truth...

"Elvis Presley Blues" aka Jimmy doing his best Johnny Cash imitation...My pick of the CD so far...What a GREAT tune!

Sorry but the Speedo Man disagrees with you on this album, its great a solid 9 out of 10. Its fun and has some really catchy tunes, and musically its outstanding. The only thing it is missing is a mean tuba solo from your Royal Manlyness on Party at the End of the World. Its the Better the Far Side and certainly was way better then LTC, but Bobby likes every JB album except for Somewhere over China. But this one is great, with at least 10 A level JB tunes. It reminds old Bobby Boy of Fruitcakes a little bit with so many good songs on one CD that is.

Thanks

Speedo Bob

Well, on the possibility that the local "West Guy" had the new CD out early.....so I cruised over to ours today to check. The cute little West Guy guy came over and asked if he could help me find something....I gave him the standrad, "No, I'm just looking...." Then he says, "Are you looking for the new Jimmy Buffett CD....?" I'm thinking.....MY GOD....THE KID IS PSYCHIC...then I realize I have on a M'ville t-shirt....M'ville flip flops, a corona baseball hat and margarita earrings.....could I BE A BIGGER DORK....I think not.
Yes, I am Jimmy Buffett's walking billboard.....truly, it wasn't planned either....just grabbed out of the closet and off I went.
Oh, and the cd wasn't out yet.....

There's a lot to be said about taste or lack thereof. I've been a Buffett fa for over a decase but have never considered myself a parrothead. In fact I hate the term. It remonds me of some mindless drones programmed to like any POS Buffett puts out.

The new album leaves a helluva lot to be desired. Waht the deal with PArty at the End of the World and those strange backing vocals. Sounds like he's attempting to make Hot Water look liike a great album!!

Imagine my best friend's frustration– he's a "West Guy" manager (in a different city) and his buddy's able to get the cd early but he can't! He said he rushed into the store when he heard that I had it but they have it on lockdown in the back – 65 copies.

I read this as I was answering my phone at w**k, and was having the most difficult time actually saying anything into the phone as I was trying to cover up the fact that I was laughing hysterically.....

I like the fact that it was entirely coincidental. :D It would take me a couple minutes of conscious thought to put together an ensemble like that. :D
