10. Sending The Old Man Home
9. California Promises
8. Coast of Marseilles
7. A Pirate Looks at Forty
6. He Went to Paris
5. Pacing The Cage
4. Everlasting Moon
3. Biloxi
2. When the Coast is Clear
1. Survive (Although I celebrate each day I survive with that song playing as loud as my speakers will take)

I also have a sentimental place in my heart for Stars Fell On Alabama, as my son was conceived under the Alabama stars twenty-four years ago this June. A house full of company, too much wine, and gardenias in bloom=a great kid.

He has a way of making you feel really meloncholy or exceptionaly happy all at the same time. That's what makes him so special. Here's what the wife and I came up with.

Nobody speaks to the captain no more.
When the coast is clear.
If the phone doesn't ring its me.
She's going out of my mind.

Sorry about the double post last night, but as you can see, when I thought more my mind changed. Hey, I'm a 50 year old woman, I have the right. Besides, my computer was being nasty and didn't acknowledge the post.

This discussion thread reminds me of the liner notes to the box set -- the ones where JB claimed "If the Phone Doesn't Ring ..." is the only sad song he's written (or words to that effect). With songs like Survive, Nobody Speaks to the Captain ..., When the Coast is Clear, and my personal favorite, She's Going Out of my Mind, I think he was mistaken.

I love every single song that Buffett has done. He puts a meaning behind each and every song and that is why I think he is the best songwriter ever. Some sad but oh so great songs are: False Echoes, I have found me a home(although it is a love ballad, Jimmy's dedication to Key West), God's Own Drunk(the damn bear stole Jimmy's whiskey still), Nobody Speaks to the Captain No More and Changing Channels just to name a few. Keep making great tunes Jimmy!!!!!!!

It would be fruitless to sit around and contamplaint the “saddest” Buffet song. Songs that we may perceive sad by nature where written to familiarize individuals of other sometimes eccentric and melancholy lifestyles. The message that he is trying to convey is that people are different by nature and we should not judge them until you know how there specific lot in life. Hell the poor character “Ace” had it rough. He could not read or write and he slept on a bench every night. To quote Jimmy “ wasted years have left him only a straw hat”. I guess being down 11.5% in this last market quarter does not seem that bad anymore. The point I am trying to make is I don’t even find that song sad. The song was written to inspire, inform, and motivate others not to be verbalized as sad. Please do not turn the 70’s chief poet into a whisky swilling country singer.

Jimmy— don’t give up your message is not lost on all of us.

I would say Survive and one no one has voted for not a JB original but a good cover, Robert Nester's "No Women, No Cry"

Lots of good, thoughtfully selected, morose tunes listed but surprised "Livingston's Gone To Texas" isn't on any list. Actually a couple other songs off of Living and Dying in 3/4 Time might qualify; "Bramha Fear" and "Spider John".

Surprised that no one posted this one but that's because nobody bought the album but I think JB's saddest song would be "wWhere's the Party?".

I FEEL THE NEED TO TELL JOHN THAT THESE LISTS ARE ALL IN GOOD FUN AND REPRESENT THE PEOPLES OPINION. ANYONE THAT DISRUPTS AND HAS AN OPINION SUCH AS THIS IS NO MORE THAN A FUN STEALING BOATROCKER. MAC MCANALLY BEST SAID IT WHEN HE SANG THAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEIR ••• AND A HOLE IN THE GROUND. GET THE HINT MY AFRICAN FRIEND.
