On 23 October 1983, around 6:20 am, a truck drove to Beirut International Airport, where the Marines had set up local headquarters. The truck crashed through a barbed wire fence, passed between two sentry posts, crashed through a gate and into the lobby of the Marine headquarters. The bomber detonated his explosives, equivalent to 6 tons of dynamite. The force of the explosion collapsed the four-story cinder-block building.
220 Marines, 18 Sailors and 3 Soldiers were killed.
A memorial honoring these men is at Camp Lejeune, NC.
You will not be forgotten.
