if you found a digital scale
in a high school kids book bag would you be concerned. It is also solar operated. The teen in question has had parents concerned, and in addition to normal teen/parent concerns he also is very into weight lifting/gym. Definitely takes supplement powder while at gym.
A close friend called me since I teach. I went through hs in the early 80's so my first thought is something bad. But I don't want to say that she should be concerned unless i'm really sure. Label on box, it was expensive but not as much as the scales we used to steal from chem class.
I'm not concerned about some hs kid doing some rec crap. He had a friend busted for dealing and he just turned 18 so no more kids play.

Yes, but I'm guessing it's for food rather than drugs. Is he a wrestler or active in another sport where he has to make weight? I think I read somewhere that anorexia in men was increasing exponentially. Or, the much less sinister possibility is that he's measuring his food to make sure he's getting enough protein.

nope, not measuring food. I'm with this kid alot and he's not stressing eating. Talked to the mom since that's one of the things I was thinking of. He's at the point in wrestling where he's enough under weight and can't drop a class so not a worry there either. Not stressing protein. In fact mom kind of bugs him about upping the protein and complex carbs due to the things he's doing. Nobody's ever seen him weigh food.

Are we talking digital scale around 8X8 inches?
Is it very sensitive as to its readout?
Can it be calibrated?
Answer to 2 of these seems pretty overwhelming that something is not right.
In some states digital scales of the type I have mentioned are considered drug paraphrenalia.
Just possesion can be a problem.
If he has bought these without telling parents,.....ergh!

pocket sized, solar powered listed as professional digital but doesn't say calibratable so i'm assuming it isn't. Buying it without parents knowledge not odd. He's a sr. 18yo with a job. Could be using it to measure protein/creatine powder?

I hate to tell you, but I don't know anyone who is worried about getting TOO MUCH creatine.OceanCityGirl wrote:pocket sized, solar powered listed as professional digital but doesn't say calibratable so i'm assuming it isn't. As some have mentioned; small digital scales are considered paraphernalia in some areas. If you are really concerned, you could get a "field test" from the local police and swipe it down for any traces.
Just thinking back on some of my high school "jobs"... a digital scale sure would have beat eye-balling it.

better to know trouble. He's got good parents who will, I think deal with it properly. She just wanted to know if I could think of a non-trouble use for something like this. And I wanted to know if we, being kids in the late 70's early 80's were just the sort who thought everything meant drugs.
Wanted to know how far to press it when the kid comes with some bs legit reason for having this.

Did you add the part about the friend that got busted or did I just miss it the first time?
But not knowing the kid or his background, I can't say. I can tell you that in my high school (a suburban/small town HS outside of Indianapolis, pretty much completely middle class, around 1000 kids total) it would have been easier for me to get any drug short of heroin- and maybe I just didn't hear those stories- than alcohol (from my classmates, not even outside dealers).

my sons are 19 and personally have four friends who've been in rehab, two for heroine, one for coke. We live in a high income small town. Very easy to get this stuff. Yes there are some slight reasons to be concerned about the kid. But if you didn't see the scale they could easily be stupid hs senioritis crap.
I began drinking more often about two months into my twins sr yr.
