The Who!

Post by MonumentBeach »

Been meaning to bring up a Who thread for a while now. I missed their show in Boston back in September as I was away on holiday, but now I have my chance as they return to Boston tomorrow night. Being one of my favorite bands of all time, I'm pretty psyched to see them finally playing new material.

Has anybody here caught them on this current tour yet? If so, any thoughts? How is the new material coming across? I'm really enjoying the new album but I was curious how the fans are responding to them at the live shows.

I'll post my thoughts here Sunday after the show.

I saw them in Chicago back on Sept 25. Great show. Roger and Pete had a ton of energy and the rest of the band did the songs justice. The perfect mix of new stuff and old. Great show production and videos. They did a quick little version of the new mini opera that was cool. Plenty of hits, some obscure stuff and a different spin on some classics. Defintely worth going. Hoping to make the Cincy show in December. Only downside is that the show was too short, but of course you want it to last forever. Excited that i'm getting Sirius now for RM, I just hope they keep the WHO channel for a while. Enjoy the show! Oh, another good part, they are selling DVDs of all the American shows at themusic.com

I meant to say that I am hoping to see them in Columbus OH. Of course they would never play Cincinnati again after the tragedy :(

Saw them here in early October and the show opened on a great note with Pete & Roger and the band blasting through their earliest hits, accompanied by lots of great video footage from the early days. Pete was up to his old form and the band was great, but Roger seemed to be suffering a little (said he's developed an allergy to marijuana, so ...). But, they really turned it up towards the end of the show and the encore (from Tommy) was great!!

My only complaint was that they went overboard plugging the new CD (Endless Wire) and played songs from it for about 45 minutes to an hour STRAIGHT after the first 15 or 20 minutes (and a few others throughout the show) and really lost the crowd. I don't mind them highlighting the new stuff, but they really seemed to be out of touch with the audience. Found it quite different from Jimmy's approach in Las Vegas (after TTWWY came out) when he mixed only 4 or 5 new songs in with the rest of the show!

Anyway, that's my 2 Canadian cents worth (and I've already been chastized for it).
'Cause I want to be there, I want to go back down and lie beside the sea there ...

I was also at that show and thought most of it was terrific. But Roger's voice was in bad shape. at one point, he left the stage and they had to do a song without him, explaining that it was an allergic reaction. Given comments I have seen here and elsewhere, I think it more likely is a voice that is overused and abused.

Saw them at the Hollywood Bowl in early October and it was great!! They were very energetic and really putting on a great show. After seeing the posted set-lists, we got treated to an extra song....BONUS!!!

I ordered the CD/DVD combo from Image. It should be shipping sometime this month.

I'm going to take my 8 year old son to their San Diego show in March...got tickets already... :D

Roger's voice sounds shot on the live DVD that comes with Endless Wire but it sounds fine on the new album itself. As for them debuting so much of the new album in concert, that's actually what a lot of artists used to do when touring behind a new album, including Mr. Buffett.

Really enjoyed the show on Saturday night. The Who are probably my favorite band ever...so anytime I have a chance to see them in something special. Since I've seen them live many times, I was actually more interested in hearing them play their new material rather than the old classics.

The new stuff was really well done I thought. I enjoyed the "mini-opera" which was played right in the middle of the show. I also thought Fragments came across much better than it does on the album, and Man in a Purple Dress and Mike Post Theme were also highlights.

My only worry is that this might have been my last opportunity to see them live. At 62 and 61 respectively, Roger and Pete can't go on too much longer...especially with the way Roger abuses his voice.

Still one of the best live acts around, though!

Here's a review from the Boston Globe...
