Ya know, some folks really do want to leave this world a better place for your children and grandchildren, while keeping folks like LLG employed. I'm really starting to wonder if it is worth the bother. :-?

You know nothing about me or what I do for a living...you read about it in books and base you opinion on what they say. I'm assuming, cause if you knew how it really worked you wouldn;t say those things...but please sit on your high horse, and next time you have a fish dinner, or use bait to go fishing, think of the dinner you put on my plate...or the mortage payment you made for me

And boy did you misinterpret that. My point was I do know what you do...and I do trust that you follow the regs. I think there is a happy medium where you can continue to do what you do without the detriment that has been done by others. Care to retract your post?

perhaps your family stays within the legal limits of their profession; however, stats prove that most trawlers don't...

ummm longlinergirl...

oh and what stats say that...cause I know a lot of draggers, my hubby being one, and there are alwys observers and coast gusrd and NMFS and the likes checking up and making sure they do what they are supposed to...as well as they are tracked by gps trpe machines so that the gvmt knows where they are at all times so they cant fish in excluded areas...please post the stats though, I know a lot of peoplr who would be interested in them

you mentioned one time they no longer longlined..but trawled...

you know, it really doesn't matter...swordfish are so few anymore, it's barely worth the effort, is that not correct?

perhaps not in your familys time, but if things donn't reverse themselves, this discussion re:whales, re:fishing, re:overfishing will have had it's final say..

being that I'm 1007 miles away from where I call home now, that's going to be impossible at the present time...

I'm not sure that I have the International Wildlife Magazine that the article was published.

but I will see if I can find it when I get home...

you know as well as I do that a tremendous amout of illegal take gets under the wire...

sooo you don't longline anymore but do actually trawl...?

billfish stocks in the florida straits are at 98%..they were at 96% when they shut down the straits...bear (no pun intended...ok sort of) in mind that the large boats are still fishing and the only boats shut down are the little one...say under 40'....we caught around 15000lbs a year, while they do that (at least) a month...
no, I dont longline anymore, but some still do and yes my old man is a dragger
the fishermen work very hard in keeping up stocks, keep in mind that if there are no fish, we have no jobs so we are quite interested in keeping stocks healthy and in fact do more research (and contribute to research) than anyone because we are the ones out there everyday.

I am really interested in your stats though...not mean like, it would just be interesting to see what they say.

ummm no...it is checked and re checked, and if they do find someone that is taking illegal fish they are heavily fined and their licence suspended...and if its a big enough citation or numerous violations they do go to jail. Tremendous is just not correct...
sooo you don't longline anymore but do actually trawl...?

the article was geared more specifically towards swordfish, but did cover several other fishes...it's a bimonthly publication, and I should still have it.

well i can tell you for a fact, from personal experience, there are pleanty of swordfish to go around...even the scientific reports (Billfish biomass study) said the stocks were in the high 90% the year before the closure...but IGFA said they werent there so....but 6 months after the closure they (IGFA) to up the bag limit for rec fishermen...interesting...

Anyway, when you get the chance, please send..you can email or pm me
Thanks :)
