US. I don't think they had mummers in Italy, although they had them in Ireland for sure. The Italians just took it up on Philly.

If you know what mummers are and what they do, why do you ask? :)

The tradition of mummers goes back to Europe where they were very popular in the 1700s and 1800s with parades, plays and other events taking place throughout Europe, primarily in England, and Ireland but there are recorded mummer performances in France, Northern Italy, Germany and the Low Countries.

Philadelphia has always had the strongest traditions of mummers in the US and still features the annual parade.

I thought a mummer was a person that used to get beat up at band camp.

My Mom is a native Philadelphian. She grew up in Port Richmond (when it was nice). Growing up, we lived in Central NJ (Belle Mead) and she hawled us all to the parade one year in the in the late 70's. It was COLD and SNOWING. EVERYONE was drunk - except our family - from what I remember. We got there at like noon and she wanted to see the Fancies who weren't marching until like 7 pm. I didn't want to be there in the first place.

Looking back, that one day is probably the #1 reason why parades have never thrilled me.
