THE DAY YOU TRULY BECAME A PARROTHEAD ?

Post by saltshaker1 »

JUST WONDERING? WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU TRULY BECAME A PARROTHEAD? I'LL START. FOR MANY YEARS NOW I'VE LOVED BUFFETT AND HIS MUSIC. BUT I WAS TOTALLY SOLD ON FEB. 20TH 1999. MY HUSBAND AND I WAS AT THE WILDHORSE SALOON IN NASHVILLE WITH ANOTHER COUPLE WHO WERE DESPERATLY TRYING TO GET INTO COUNTRY MUSIC. THEY HAD ALWAYS BEEN HARD ROCK FANS. BUFFETT HAD PLAYED THE THEN NASHVILLE ARENA THAT NIGHT AND THE CONCERT HAD LET OUT. A SLEW OF PARROTHEADS HAD COME INTO THE WILDHORSE TO FINISH THEIR NIGHT OF PARTY AND FUN. MY HUSBAND WHO IS THE WORLDS BIGGEST WAYLON AND MERLE FAN EVER SAW THEM AND OF COURSE THOUGHT IT WAS THE CRAZIEST THING HE'D EVER SAW. I HOWEVER SAW ALL THE FUN THESE PHOLKS WERE HAVING AND AT THAT MOMENT WAS TOTALLY SOLD. I HAD BEEN SOLD PRIOR TO THAT BUT THAT NIGHT WAS THE ICING ON THE CAKE. THANK YOU TO ALL THE PARROTHEADS FROM THAT NASHVILLE CONCERT THAT COLD FEB. NIGHT FOR SHOWING ME THERE WAS A BETTER , MORE FUN WAY OF LIFE. I'VE NEVER BEEN THE SAME SINCE!!! THANK GOD!!! :D

What a good topic!

I'm just an old hippie.. went to college in FLA and hung out in the keys just PRIOR to JB's arrival. So when Come Monday came out I had it and loved it. It was 1977 though when I realized I was really into the whole scene. Found myself organizing a trip to Merriweather Post, dressed in a luau shirt and dancing on the lawn which only had a couple hundred pholks on it. I think that was pre-"Parrot head." There were no parrot costumes and only a few of us whackos dressed for the occasion.
Been every year at least once since then.
Then there was the conga line at a party the week Volcano came out. We literally put in on and replayed it a dozen times til the whole crowd had it memorized. The neighbors loved me!
And I can play this here guitar,,
Gonna thank my lucky stars.

Thank you stars!!

When I was able to read a post in all caps and not think someone was screaming at me.

Seriously though, I would say it was when I showed up to my first concert in Dallas. It was the first show I traveled to, didn't know what to expect, but BNers were everywhere. Boats, RVs, pools, etc. Everyone opened their arms and hearts and I've never really been the same since.

late 80's I began to listen to Jimmy heavily but never thought of a concert. Then in the late 90's I went. Surely at that time it happened. Since then it has become more of an additiction and part of my life.

About 6 years ago... A friend of mine had a cd called "Barometer Soup"
I heard Lage Nom Ai, and I said literally.... WOW!!!! I had always heard of song's like Margaritaville and Come Monday... But that was it. Before that week was out I had six of Jimmy's cd's in my hands... I can't consider myself a full fledged PARROTHEAD until I get to see him live.. I'm looking forward to that this summer... Jimmy's got a way of even warming up the coldest December day. He takes you places with his song's.. Not many artist's have the ability to do that with their music.. Both my brother's were also fan's... When my brother Kevin was killed, one of the cd's in his collection was "Song's You Know By Heart". And you know what???? I do :pirate:

That's a good question, but a hard one to answer.

I became a member of the KISS Army when I read Gene's autobiography and was overwhelmed with what a unique person he is.

With Jon Goodwin...I listened to his music and right away knew he was special.

With Jimmy Buffett...as soon as I heard his music and knew it to be Jimmy Buffett music, I knew he was something special. I knew he just "fit" me.

The summer of 1996. It was my first concert. I went out the next day and got the box set. The rest, as they say, is history.

I was 12 and my older sister brought home the A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean ALBUM when it first came out...

I've been hooked ever since.
Some people never find it, some only pretend
But me, I just want to live happily ever after every now and then.

Sitting in our small apartment listening to a Savoy Brown album, when our friend rushed in (ala Kramer) "you guys got to hear this", it was YOU HAD TO BE THERE and we have been there ever since. Many concerts and many venues: Pine Knob, MeadowBrook, San Diego, Alpine Valley, Indy, Holiday Star Theatre, The Palace, Chicago. Turned my friends, parents, kids and grandkids into phans as well. Gave Jimmy flowers on stage at the Holiday Star back in the 80's when he was touring with just Utley.

The better question is.... when wasnt I a Parrothead.

Living in Florida since 1966... I grew up on Jimmy Buffett. My step father's parents lived in Key Largo and were sailors. I spent my weekends on a ketch kat sailing to Key West in the eaarly 70s.

In the mid 70s we moved to the west coast of Florida. About the same time Jimmy was spending alot of time on Maderia Beach so the music continued.

The lifestyle was inbred by my environment..... 8)

1987...

I'd been listening to friends tapes for a while. Then my best friend took me to a concert at the Tupperware center in Orlando. It was a great show.

Next was a benefit concert w/ Jimmy, Glen Frey, Vince Gill and Dan Marino in Ft Myers, FL. General admission, and I was in the front row w/ my sister and about 20 bikers. We had all been standing in line together before the show for about 2 hours, made friends and ran to the fron together. They kept the area in front of the stage nice and clear, so we had an awesome show.

I've gotta say...it's been a great 20 years! Now I've got a new 'keet to bring into the fold. I'll just pass it on.

1992. The day Dirk Mason took me, Stacy Stech, and Jen Schramm to our first Buffett concert. Fell in love with the experience, and my second show was less than a week later!!!!

I could also point to the day that one of the biggest Parrotheads I knew told me, "Wow, and I thought I was a Parrothead!"

I loved his music since the 70's, but a New Year's Eve party years ago made me a BONIFIDE Parrothead. The people hosting it told everybody to come dressed in tropical wear, and Jimmy's music was played all night and all of us (about 50-60) danced and were very silly and laughed...I GOT IT that night ! It was like ....... true joy ! Sharing his music with others just takes it to another heavenly level ! :D

Senior year in High School, 1975  . Went to a bar near Loyola U. on the north side of Chicago with a friend who had graduated the year before. About half way thru the night, my friend comes running out of the other room where the juke box was screaming, "Billy, Billy they've got it, a song about f*#%ing" (WDWGDAS-duh) We played it so many times, the bartender finally said, "If you high school kiddies don't want to be thrown out on your a$$, stop playing that song"

The final nail in the coffin came a couple of years later. I was working in a factory (bad grade punishment) when an INS green card raid made me the only employee. I would crank up a radio on WLUP-Chicago and do the whole assembly line by myself- a little at a time. At noon, they highlighted an album of the day. The J said, "Today we feature the newest release from Jimmy Buffett called "Son of a Son of a Sailor" They played about half the album and I bought it on the way home. By my next check i had every album and never looked back.
"Boat drinks, waitress we........nevermind"

Ever since I went to see this wild and crazy hippie guy play in Atlanta in the summer of 1976. I was just getting into his music and was really starting to connect. Then I saw what a natural showman and performer he was, and 30 years and 59 shows later, the end is nowhere in sight!

I have always had Jimmys music around, my older brother had his a few albums and we shared a bedroom growing up. But the exact point for me was about five years ago at work, sitting in my cube by the window, writing and testing code, answering the phone, looking at emails, solving problems. I started listening to Jimmy in the cube and it really helped me get through the rough days, it changed my attitude if not latitude. One particular line helped put the people I deal with in great perspective, "There is no dumbass vaccine" , I wisper this to myself all the time now. Now I try to spread Parrotheadism wherever I can. Thanks Jimmy!!
