I never got a grip on penmanship
Could never make the small ";L's"; flow .....

I went to Catholic school for 12 years. There are 2 kinds of handwriting that comes from that, a beautiful Palmer cursive or mine, chicken scratch. At least I can type & spell.

Even when I was a little kid in grade school, I thought the Q looking like a 2 was stupid
I thought the same thing, Mol. I never could understand why the Q had to look like a 2! Needless to say, I never wrote it like that!

I have a pretty handwriting, when I take the time....although most of the time some words start out in print and end up in cursive.
Yup--most of the letters look similar to the printed ones, but the Q???
Whose idea was that?
I bet it was a man!!!!

YES! I have a degree in Elementary Education....

Now I DO have to admit....I don't always USE the correct form whenI write. [smilie=battingeyes.gif] Because I decided to go into Social Work, instead of teaching.

I voted "who cares". I can read my handwriting, so can just about everybody else. That's all that matters.

And some of my favorite people write in all caps! :)
Mrs. Chip is required to teach her third graders D'Nealian style printing, which is like this. It's a printing style which is supposed to make an easier transition to cursive. Of course, it's also a copywrited style, so somebody (Mr. D'Nealian?) is making $$ from the books, computer fonts, etc.

I've always had excellent penmanship, but my son's is atrocious.
We've been practicing.

Thanks for the info on the D'nealian type of writing, that's kinda how I've been teaching him.

Yes! I do. I don't always use the correct ones with the way I write, but I know how to do them all. I still have issues with "S"--I always seem to turn it into a treble-clef.

I'm shocked that they're encouraging third graders to curse .... particularly in upper case. :o

Ours were also a little "loopier" than those pictured.... like our upper case "C" would begin with a loop...

I use cursive for addressing cards, and messages inside them. If I am just writing, it's print. I need to practice a bit on the cursive, but my handwriting is still legible.

LOL...me too!
I have never seen anyone outside of school write a Q like that! How do you get things like that changed?

The Z, T and F are just wacked, too. :D

I think the Z should be the one that looks like a 2. Instead, the cursive Z looks like a 3.

When I was learning cursive, I used to practice the lowercase r for hours, so in my writing, I do have a very attractive lowercase r.

You are not alone in the crtiticism of requiring cursive. I wasnt really aware of this until reading the wikipedia article.
