few weeks ago they came out with SNL season 1.

So much of that was ad-libbed because they were all so strung out on coke. Almost anything SNL did after that doesn't even put a match towards how creative they were back in 1975.

the writers weren't in much better shape, either.

I think the that old ones are not as funny when you watch them nowadays.
Back then there was not much edgy comedy on tv so naturally people licked it.
Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood still makes me laugh though.
If I get a Best Of, it will be Eddie Murphy's.

Wasn't Second City in Canada?
Chicago

But started earlier in Toronto
Weren't there 2 Second Cities - the TV show SCTV and an improvisational comedy group called Second City? I thought the improv group was based out of Chicago.

:) Too tired to Google and read it all..

But I *THINK* the orginal was in Toronto, but there were SC's in Chicago and Detroit.

I think I heard somewhere that Chicago was called the Second City because the great fire destroyed much of the First City of Chicago. Anyway, the original Second City improv group is from Chicago.

Also, a great "Best of" is Phil Hartman's. That man had so much talent it is sad that his life ended too soon.

Everything with Alec Baldwin on SNL has been comedy gold!
Pete Schweddy... Ferngully (with the priceless Phil Hartman)...

Chris Farley's Matt Foley would always have me laughing to tears!
"Kids... you could end up.... living in a VAN down by the RIVER!"

...and you're right about SCTV, Larry ...it was based out of Toronto 8)

I think Amy Poehler is one SNL's most hilarious babes in a LONGG time
New girl Kirsten Wiig is getting some funny stuff in this new season, too! 8)

I'd get the first year. It looks like it would be good.

Or I'd get Best of Gilda.

There was just something about her that still to this day cause me to damn near pee.

I got this for Christmas and its great to see those shows in their entirety.
Garrett Morris was the big coke head. He didn't write much at all when he was on the show just sat aroud doing coke waiting to go on stage.

"A back stage history of SNL" is a great book about SNL. It covers up to the early 80"s.
