Wasn't Second City in Canada?
Chicago
But started earlier in Toronto
Weren't there 2 Second Cities - the TV show SCTV and an improvisational comedy group called Second City? I thought the improv group was based out of Chicago.
The Original Second City Troupe was in Chicago. Their theatre is off North Avenue east of State. (easiest to get to using the Brown Line, Sedgewick station). Started in about 1958 and includes folks like Alan Alda and a real who's who of comedians and actors. There is a plaque listing the members on the front of the theatre.
The Toronto Troupe was started in the 1970s and gave the majority of the lineup for the SCTV show. Tho, Dan Ackroyd was also a member. Pretty talented crew of comedians for Canuckistanis.

Too tired to Google and read it all..
But I *THINK* the orginal was in Toronto, but there were SC's in Chicago and Detroit.
I thought the name "Second City" was a dead give away to its origin.

You better get a new map of Chicago. Wells is west of State St. And I think you mean Alan Arkin. Alda was a member of the Compass PLayers, several of them went on to form Second City.
