Re: It's just my opinion
Couldn't agree more. Groups like HSUS, PETA, ALF, and so on are nothing more than monekymaking terrorist groups. PETA is known to have given money to Rod Coronado to firebomb research facilities that used animals. The list of transgressions is as long or longer than most of the so-called "evil" corporations (Wal-Mart, Halliburton, so on).Bwana Paul wrote:The HSUS is simply not credible. Their interest is in making money. It was not always this way, but it certainly is today.
People need to realize who they are sending their money to. I come from an agrarian family, and I miss having my own fresh eggs from my own hens...all the good things that go with it. It's a better life.
I'm not trying to be insulting to anyone, but I truly believe the HSUS people are crooked, dishonest, selfish, misleading and only out to make money. I know so.
Many year ago, I compiled a book which was distributed by several rural advocate groups. It was all about what kind of people the HSUS are. I made the mistake of putting my name on it.
The results? A mess. They were calling my home, threatening me, they sent me anonymous letters trying to intimidate me.
I ended up in Washington DC and got to meet Wayne Pacelle. Here is a guy who lies whenever his mouth is open and words were coming out. I had done my research and found out all of his true agenda, and of course he denied having said the things he was on video tape saying.
Wayne doesn't believe we should be able to own pets. Yes, I said pets. The President of H$U$ is against all animal ownership. His goal is to one day have pet ownership looked at as slavery.
I don't think animals should be mistreated... However, a man who sings about Cheeseburgers in Paradise, hunts for quail, goes fishing, and eats animal flesh might want to reconsider getting into bed with HSUS.
Just remember, the Humane Society of the United States does not operate a single animal shelter. Most people who give them money are not aware of that. And the HSUS would like to keep it that way.
“[T]he Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not affiliated with, nor is it a parent organization for, local humane societies, animal shelters, or animal care and control agencies … The HSUS does not operate or have direct control over any animal shelter.”
— From a 2001 disclaimer issued by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)
“The life of an ant and that of my child should be granted equal consideration.”
— HSUS senior scholar Michael W. Fox
“The Humane Society should be worried about protecting animals from cruelty. It’s not doing that. The place is all about power and money.”
— HSUS consultant and former HSUS Chief Investigator Robert Baker, in U.S. News & World Report
“I’m not an admirer of HSUS. They’ve always been primarily a direct-mail operation, and what’s known in animal rights circles as a credit-grabber.”
— HSUS co-founder Cleveland Amory
“My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.”
— HSUS grassroots coordinator John “J.P.” Goodwin
“We’ve started picketing outside the homes of the [department store] executives … Those executives do not deserve a break. They do not deserve to go home and rest.”
— J.P. Goodwin of HSUS describing his anti-fur strategy
“HSUS really needs to be called to task for its triple sided hypocrisy. When HSUS addresses scientists they say they support animal research as necessary. When HSUS addresses the public they say it is evil but sometimes necessary. When HSUS addresses its members and other animal rights groups, they say it is evil and unnecessary.”
— Dr. Pat Cleveland of the University of California, San Diego
“If we could shut down all forms of hunting in a moment, we would.”
— Wayne Pacelle, Pres. of HSUS
“Our goal is to get sport hunting in the same category as cock fighting and dog fighting.”
— Bozeman (MT) Daily Chronicle
“We are going to use the ballot box and the democratic process to stop all hunting in the United States ... We will take it species by species until all hunting is stopped in California. Then we will take it state by state.”
— Wayne Pacelle
“We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding ...One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding.”
— Animal People News
“We would be foolish and silly not to unite with people in the public health sector, the environmental community, [and] unions, to try to challenge corporate agriculture.”
— “Animal Rights 2002” convention
If you don't believe PETA is dangerous, or youre a pet-owner who donates to PETA thinking your money goes to a good cause, watch the PETA episode of "Penn & Teller: BULLSH*T!". It very nicely summarizes all the main points against PETA in a 30-minute program.

Just wait one minute here, you can pick on HSUS and PETA, but when you start on Alf I got a problem. What has he ever done to you? He is a funny, fuzzy little alien who had his show canceled, so give him a freakin break.

M.K. "You should never use any of the 13 bad words!"

Funny you should mention him (I loved that show as a kid, too). I think it's strange the Animal Liberation Front stuck with that name and corresponding acronym since it forms "ALF", who if memory serves me correctly, loved to eat live cats. Wouldn't they be against that?Indiana Jolly Mon wrote:Just wait one minute here, you can pick on HSUS and PETA, but when you start on Alf I got a problem. What has he ever done to you? I'm not on the avenue of joking about breast cancer. I guess I read it in a different way. I took the smiley face as a positive, thinking that people, perhaps, should be talking about breast cancer in a hopeful way and the smiley face is a HEY! for that subject.
Perhaps they could post again and clarify. I'm not saying any of this to be right or wrong. Maybe I mis-read it or I read it out of context. Maybe I'm missing the point of 'a long thread.' If they were joking they have a...side-tracked sense of humour, if one were to call it that.
Just curious. Set me straight would'ja?

I am glad I started this thread...
First, I did not see the first thread because I was away at Christmas when all this came out. Second, it appears that after I did start the thread it has brought back some issues that people wanted to express. Third, after reading the whole first thread on the issue, there are still some people that did not know that the facts that lead to Jimmy's decision where wrong.
As for beating a dead horse here, I beg to differ. First, if people wish to not discuss the issue there are plenty of other threads that have been beaten to death a lot more than this one!
However, the people that have commented on beating a dead horse here for the most part have returned to jump back in the discussion.
I am very glad I posted this, and I am glad there is still an active discussion, which I have caught up on since I was holding auditions for a film yesterday (being Simon Cowell) and have no access to the forms.
I think we need more discussions of this sort on this website and hope to bring up issues such as this when I see them.

Jumping into the fray...
I take issue with the title of this thread. It is designed to provoke...
When someone does something in line with their inner beliefs, how can someone else call them "wrong"? You have the right to disagree, but not to say they are wrong.

Amen, trojan 61, and Garry, I'm with you!trojan_sixtyone wrote: Whether you agree with it or not, Jimmy has the right to any opinion he wants and if this is one of his, so what. If it really bothers you so much, don't buy any more CDs, concert tickets, t-shirts, books, food, etc. Otherwise, acknowledge the man has a right to do what he wants, just like you and I, and just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean it's "wrong."
In America we seem to forget that the Bill of Rights protects every individual's right to free speech, but NOT the right for everyone to be protected from being offended. Sorry if you are offended by Jimmy's actions and stance on it, but it's his call.

I couldn't agree more re. discussions of this sort on this BuffettNews. Unfortunately, some folks dislike conflict around things like this and get extremely territorial and uncomfortable when Jimmy and his work are challenged in any way. As long as the posts stay civil and respectful I think this type of discussion enriches this site...it gives us a chance to truly interact and learn something from each other.Couganata wrote:I think we need more discussions of this sort on this website and hope to bring up issues such as this when I see them.
I personally don't find disagreement with Jimmy on this topic any different from expressing dislike for a particular song he's recorded. It's all response to his work as a public figure (musician, performer, restaraunteur, businessman, environmentalist, celebrity, political supporter, etc.).
On the thread title, I can understand where saying Jimmy is "wrong" may strike some as being too strong. Even though a key fact used to explain his position on this is indeed wrong (inaccurate), it's purely an opinion or judgement call as to whether his choice to support the boycott is a good one. That said, this isn't the first discussion thread title on BN to reflect personal opinion (and in this case the thread title seems to have encouraged participation). However, any time you share your opinion (especially in a thread title) you have to expect some may disagree. The key is everyone having the chance to share their reaction and perspective.

Oh, and then there was Volcano Lady..... (Someone else, please educate this, ah, person about the breast cancer thread.... I've already lost my temper....)
Umm....would I still be laughing? Yes!
Fact: my mother died from lung cancer 2 years ago days before Christmas.
Fact: my uncle died from throat cancer in the late 80's
Fact: my stepfather dies of brain cancer in 1982
Fact: a friend of the family died of breast cancer in the mid 80's
Fact: laughter is good for the soul
These types of threads with everyone's outpouring of opinions, political views and "moral" standpoints make me laugh....and THAT'S what I am laughing at...not cancer. But if anyone has a right or reason to laugh at ANYTHING remotely related to cancer it is me. Would I still be laughing? What even makes you think you have the right to question me? You dont know me or anything that I have been through. You're going to lose or lost your temper? Who cares? Here's the bottom line....if you dont want people to post up comments, dont start a thread. There is plenty of crap on here that I refrain from commenting on. Why? Because my political views don't always meet up with everyone else's and I dont feel like having a heated debate about it. But you think you have the market cornered on cancer, cancer victims, coping with cancer and grief....at least that's how you come across...the authority on cancer. No one should laugh at it? My mother made many a joke about when she lost her hair. You could learn a thing or two from a cancer patient lady. So...yes I would laugh at it and HAVE laughed at it and will laugh at it one day again I am sure. We need more laughter in this world and less PC BS and less bleeding heart martyrs.
