Appointment with the spine specialist went great... He believes it is just muscle strain. He showed us the CT scan that indicates a slight irregularity in the first vertebra, but with no swelling doesn't think it is a ligament. Got Nick a new soft collar that he is to wear for three weeks, but which Nick says he absolutely WILL NOT wear to school! No skateboarding or physical activity for three weeks.
Son is depressed. BUT his skateboarding buddy broke his ankle three weeks ago, so Nick and he can commiserate. 
They'll just have to study more.
