"Notoriety" is the one I hear most often these days
In fact on last night's news the mayor of Indianapolis said "the Colts in the Super Bowl will bring notoriety to the city."
Per Dictionary.com:
Notoriety: the state of being known for some unfavorable act or quality (as in notorious)
"Recognition" might work a bit better there, Bart....
What other words get messed up?
"Reading departure signs in some big airport reminds me of the places I've been"
50 countries and territories, 46 states...so far

Orientated. Usually when people use this word they really mean oriented .
Second on my list is the word utilize , when the word use will suffice.

Ideals (when "ideas" is actually the proper word.)
"I have some really great ideals for our new project."
Drives me crazy.

"of", as in should of, would of. It's "have"
grow - we have to grow our business. How do you grow a business? Sprinkle your employees on the lawn and water them every day?

and when people end a sentence with a preposition...
i.e. - "Where are you
at ?"
"Where are you?"

"Crafting" when they mean "making policy". Or all we all scrapbookers now??

There's a joke about that.
An American is in England and he walks up to someone and asks "Where's the library at?" The Englishman tells him "In England, we don't end a sentence with a preposition." The American says "Where's the library at, a$$hole?"

"Crafting" hasn't made it's way to my world, yet, but we used to constantly hear "grow the business." I work closely with a systems architect who not only chomps gum loudly on conference calls, but I can count on more than one hand how many horrible business-isms he uses and misuses in a single meeting.
The worst part about it is he probably easily makes a 6 figure income.

Personally, I get peeved when people consider themselves to be the word cops of the world and decide it is more important to parse and correct my spoken words. "Did you understand what I was communicating?!!!!! Your wisea$$ reply only tells me you are too dimwitted to make logical inferences or you are simply a rude and pompous windbag."
Yeah, yeah. If it is a news broadcast or a published work .... go ahead and point out the error. But don't correct my speech if it is irrelevant to our conversation and the point I may have been making.
Thank you. I feel better now.
